Hello, I am having trouble picking a major. I enjoy photography, but don’t want to major in it. I want a major that can compliment it or a career that might involve it. What did you major in, and/or how did it help with your photography or compliment it, whether it be the arts, business, science, etc. What did you end up doing after with that major that might incorporate photography? Thanks.
What about picking a major that you enjoy studying (can be anything) and minoring in photography??
Yea, not sure what to pick, there is no photography minor at my school, and I am limited in picking a major. I can go into earth/environmental science, communication, anthropology, journalism, history, and graduate within the next 2 years with my bachelors if I chose one of those majors.
Yeah I would suggest you to pick one of those more “conventional” majors and just continue on your photography through clubs at your school and outside school in the nearby areas. Maybe you could even do internships at photography related jobs. I doubt you need a degree in “photography” to become a photographer later.
Communications can pair nicely with Photography. As would some sort of small business ownership major- some schools offer a small business owenership type of major that might be nice. The combo would prepare you to someday open your own photo studio.
I am thinking of pairing my love for photography with a communication degree.
My 16 year old high school sophomore is starting to think about colleges and career plans. She’s an “artsy” kid-- she loves art, photography, things of that sort. She’s active on Stage Crew of her school’s plays.
She’s considering elementary ed, maybe graphic arts, maybe something with photography. If she does go that last route, we’ll be encouraging the Communications link to help round out her eventual resume.
I think that may very well be a wise choice for you. And if there’s room in your schedule, consider some of those business classes-- maybe a marketing class or two. My older daughter just switched her major to Communications, but she’ll be minoring in Marketing. It’s easy enough to do at her school-- the two areas of study dovetail so nicely!
Thanks so much for the advise. Maybe Ill just stick with the com major, and do the marketing and a photography minor.
Take a look at the catalog, see how many courses can do double duty.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do.
Picking a major can be so hard! I always knew I liked writing and music, but I didn’t want to necessarily major in either of them. I chose to study communications because it seemed like a good way to combine all my interests, and I love it!
But, here are are some good tips that might help!
