Having Trouble Sleeping

We all know that getting adequate sleep is vital to academic performance, but I'm having some trouble with that.

While I do my best to avoid sugar/caffeine after lunch, naps during the day, and television at night, I'm having trouble staying asleep throughout the night. I wake up approximately 3-5 times in the night, only to start to get into deep sleep a couple hours before I have to wake up. That sucks, seriously.

When I'm at school, I often have these awful yawns that feel quite comfortable, the feeling of an overworked person (who is just beginning the day).

What can I do about this? This is a problem I really don't need.

Are you going to sleep very late at night? Because that may affect the quality of your sleep. If you go to bed at a normal time and are still waking up constantly, I think may be stressed (about school, workload, etc.).

Try taking 5 min before bed to calm down a little…meditate.

Another thing you can try is white noise or binaural beats music. I used to wake up randomly at night for no reason, and listening to that has helped me sleep better. I actually felt I had more energy throughout the day. Try looking up the Meditation Podcast, White Noise Meditation, or Holosync program (this one’s very expensive, actually).

One possible reason could be that you’re not yet accustomed to where you’re living. Normally, I sleep really well at night and last year I went away on my own to this physics camp and I barely slept the first few nights. I was so paranoid because I didn’t know a soul, I wasn’t sure what my roommate was like, I kept thinking that someone might sneak into the room and do God knows what. lol. When I settled in it was fine.

Another reason could be, as zizi said, that you’re going to bed too late.

As for a solution, I find that when if I stretch for ~10 minutes just before going to bed, I sleep like a log. Stretch your legs and arms, roll your neck around a bit and if you can, do 1 or 2 crab backs (like in gymnastics) for your back. Hopefully this helps.

I had this problem in summer college too, but not anymore.

At Summer@Brown, I went to bed at around 1 or 1:30. Nowadays I go to bed at around 11:30 or 12, and I have less trouble sleeping.

For some people it keeps them awake. I tend to take a shower (helps release tension and relaxes your body) and then surf on the Internet casually for a few minutes or so with the lights off (no games) right before going to bed.

Although it spoils eventually, I always drink a small glass of milk before going to bed. Maybe its a security thing with a placebo effect, but it works for me. Otherwise, it is very difficult for me to go to sleep. Meditation sounds like a great idea too.
