which schools in hawaii are best for out-of-staters and why?

I think that Hawaii Pacific University is the strongest Hawaiian school academically, although Chaminade University isn’t too shabby. The University of Hawaii in Manoa is also friendly to out-of-staters. Those three are the only ones worth looking at.

i am from hawaii and i didnt even apply to any local schools. hawaii has to have the worst collegiate education in the country. all 3 of those schools, which are regarded as the top 3 colleges in the state, are not good at all. UH has a good marine biology and international business program, but thats about it. hpu has good nursing. chaminade doesnt have any good programs.

anybody here go to a university in hawaii?

haha i assume hawaii is not well represented here :)

It’s rather expensive to go to school in Hawaii. Not only is the education expensive for OOS students, but then you have the travel costs to get there.

Is money a concern?

Ok…I remember you now…

you’ve said that you have a $70k EFC, yet your parents will only pay $5k-10k. Has your situation changed? IF not, Hawaii schools are just not do-able. As a matter of fact, if your situation has not changed, your only strategy is big merit schools, commuting to a local 4 year, or going to a cc. Seriously.

Have you gotten any SAT or ACT scores yet??

*w/ regards to merit aid
GPA: 3.8 UW/4.2 W right now (ill probably have a 3.6 UW/4.0 W by the time i graduate)
SAT: believe it or not i have not taken it yet, but i expect to get around 650 for each section
i’m not sure if ill take the ACT, but i think i can get a 30

i want to be an engineer or at least something science related…i am a HS junior right now

my parents are not willing to spend a whole lot on me…$10k/year would be stretching it, so a more realistic amount would be $5k/year

i dont care what type of environment my school is in, but i do want it to be residential as much as possible*

You have an EFC of $70,000 and your parents are only going to pay less than 10% of that? Do your parents actually want you to go to college?
