what are the really good schools in hawaii?

Chaminade! :) To be honest, I haven't heard anything good about Hawaiian schools. ...Especially for mainlanders, against whom the students apparently tend to discriminate.

the University of Hawaii? meh. http://www.studentsreview.com/HI/UHM_c.html

Brigham Young has a campus there too, but I can't see the appeal of it unless you're mormon.

plus, the cost of living there is HIGH.

i'm from hawaii, but sadly, don't quote me on this: understand it's just my opninion and word of mouth. best bet is probably the university of hawaii--manoa. for mainlanders, this is probably good for ocean stuff, marine studies, asian/pacific studies.

other colleges on oahu: chaminade, hawaii pacific university (HPU), and brigham young--all private. chaminade, as i understand, has gotten less applicants due to the recruiting of HPU. HPU gives really good financial aid, i hear (dunno if it's all students or preference to hawaii students). however, i hear that for what you pay... not as good. ALL HEARSAY! for about $9000-$10000 a year at HPU, people prefer UH.

UH is DEFINATELY much bigger than all the other schools. and to avoid confusion, UH-manoa is on oahu (main campus) and UH-Hilo is on the Big Island (also refered to as Hawaii).

hope this helps. :)

going to hawaii probably isn't worth it if you're the typical CCer since they really don't have any great universities, however if marine biology or or other ocean-dealing stuff is your thing it's a fantastic oppurtunity

I lived in Hawaii and moved from that state as my children reached college age because there is no great college in that state, although there are some selected programs that could be great if the state continues to fund them. Unfortunately there are two things a mainland student should consider. First, Hawaii has a reputation of underfunding it's schools and has had programs(majors) dismantled while students were within a year of completing them. Their law school almost lost its credidation. Second, there is a pervasive racist attitude held by a significant number of people that is anti anyone not a pacific islander.

Two examples: Kill Haole Day, where students beat up whites, was still being practiced by some high school students within this past decade. Granted this was primarily on neighbor islands, but some of those kids will be going to Manoa and Hilo.

Second, the racist KKK photos and jokes about the black berries (african american students) that occured in school year books also within the past ten years.

Hawaiians can be wonderful friends and once you are adopted into their family you can lose the Haole guy status, but some carry a big chip on their shoulder because their own beautiful island paradise is being priced out of their reach.

You probably wouldn't notice this as a tourist because they treat tourist fairly nice, but you might notice it the first time you parked in a local guys parking spot down by the surf.

Yes, it is true.
