Hazing Scandal: Rolling Stone Edition

[Confessions of an actual Dartmouth student: Rolling Stone vomits all over Ivy Leaguers | New York Daily News](http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/pageviews/2012/04/confessions-of-an-actual-dartmouth-student-rolling-stone-vomits-all-over-ivy-leagu)

Wow…Dartmouth admin must be freaking. The timing of the article hits right as the '16 admits are making their choice. Even if the article exaggerates, it has to have a negative effect on those students and their tuition-paying parents.

Is that the saaaaame Janet Reitman who wrote the scandalous Rolling Stone article about the Duke Frat Boys?

[Sex And Scandal At Duke | JANET REITMAN](<a href=“Welcome janetreitman.com - BlueHost.com”>Welcome janetreitman.com - BlueHost.com)

She definitely has a bone to pick with frat boys.

And those “facts” proved to be so true, didn’t they?

^^This article will have no effect on matriculation decisions. There are plenty of happy women and minorities at Dartmouth that just love it there. Just because a bunch of lacrosse frats got accused of misogyny did not make Duke less attractive for women, or Yale frats yelling “No means yes, yes means …” did not suddenly diminish Yale’s stature. There are bad apples at every institution.

That is true cmarmon but if I were making a tough decision between Dartmouth and another top school this would definitely lead mr to favor the other school.

Jared94, you may be right, but it would not behoove anyone to make decisions based on that article. Let’s not forget Dartmouth is #1 in undergraduate teaching if anyone is interested in going where teaching is valued. See how well Dartmouth rates in student satisfaction relative to other Ivies:

Can someone message me the above link as I am strongly considering dartmouth at the moment perhaps over Harvard and Yale.

Based on the link it looks like brown and Dartmouth are the places to be.

Please don’t make any college decision based on that kind of website. Visit each school, stay overnight, get a feel for the culture and go where you feel most comfortable.

The article cited in post #2 above is really excellent. All I can say is that if Reitman bought Lohse’s BS about everyone being a wealthy, entitled, I-banker wannabee, she is a complete fool.

But I doubt that she is a complete fool, and I doubt that she really bought it. I think she is a cynical liar who knows precisely what carefully pruned version of the “facts” will sell to her target market. It is quite possible that she justifies it to herself because it suits her personal prejudices.

This is not to say that the fraternity or social scene in general at Dartmouth or Duke or any other college is without negative behaviors–How many times have people bemoaned the negative effects of binge drinking and the hookup culture on some young people?–and I strongly agree that those behaviors should be rooted out. Without being foolish enough to point to Greeks as the root of all evil, as I’ve said before, I’d be happy to see D have residential colleges or something similar and no fraternities or sororities.

BTW, I know people whose visiting HS seniors have been treated to scenes of debauchery including drunken, vomiting hosts at Greek-free campuses including Bowdoin and Middlebury.

And here’s an alternative point of view – a freshman who likes the fraternities.

First years’ experience with Greek life is very limited so I am reluctant to put much stock in what this freshman says.
