Looking to go to UT and go greek. How is hazing there these days?

Don’t quote me on this because I’m not Greek, but as far as I know it isn’t a serious problem. I think there was a frat a couple of years ago that got in trouble for hazing, but I don’t think any of them really have that reputation. (then again if there was a hazing problem, the frat members wouldn’t go around talking about it, I guess.)

Definitely don’t quote buriedalie. Way off. Almost every frat still does it, just not many get caught. Even the jewish frat got caught this year and is currently being investigated lol.

Sorority - we got honey put on our hands then had to hold hands with everyone else with our eyes closed.

LOL. Harmless shiz.

so nothing too bad?

It all depends on the sorority/frat. Some are more party based and do alot of worse things to you. but then again it depends on what kind of house you pledge that fits your preference

[Urban Dictionary: elephant walk](Urban Dictionary: elephant walk)

Almost every frat does this with the exceptions of a few obscure ones.

^W T F??? you have to be joking?

I wish I was haha, it’s like one of those things that everyone knows goes on but nothing can really be done about it

Actually, something CAN be done about it: [University of Texas at Austin - Office of the Dean of Students - DOS Central - Memorandum on Hazing Law and UT Regulations](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/doscentral/hazing_memorandum.php)

The more students that report hazing in their organizations, or other organizations, the less hazing there will be. It’s a really awful practice that detracts from the doctrine of the sorority or fraternity.

Are you a guy or a girl? Hazing is going to happen wherever you go greek because of the definition that UT sets. Asking a pledge to get you a glass of water is technically considered hazing. Its just to what degree some fraternities take it. Some fraternities dont because of past run ins with IFC, some do because they havent been caught. Send me a message if you want more information, Im greek at UT. and that elephant walk stuff is absolutely erroneous.

Hahaha elephant walk. I feel like that wouldnt be possible though…

Most of the top frat haze. You see much less with girls…or at least its very different and not really bad like with guys. They will all tell you that they don’t…and its all hush hush on campus. Not something you talk about.

Yeah pretty much all the frats haze. They usually lie about it at the beginning and make you believe they don’t, but if you ask around you’ll probably hear differently. Even some of the ones that are being punished with conditional signups or whatever still do it.
Funny thing is that I met a handful of people who seemed pretty convinced that their frat wouldn’t haze them… lol. By the time they were actually hazed they were okay with it.

As someone who is greek at another school, has lots of friends who are greeks at UT, and who’s dad was greek at UT, I can say this: Pretty much all fraternities participate in things that one MIGHT consider hazing. Usually the more popular a fraternity, the harder the hazing, as they are more desirable and try harder to weed out less dedicated pledges. However, from my experiences and stories from friends, it’s never anything that will cause any harm, it’s mainly just a huge mind f&ck. Scavenger hunts to find trivial items, memorizing lots of stuff, being blindfolded at times, having to dress a certain (dressed up) way. Stuff like that is pretty universal. It all adds to the aura of a fraternity and is not really harmful, but is stuff my University would consider hazing. This is not a reason not to go greek, just be willing to spend lots of time on things that seem stupid.
And the elephant walk is a myth, GDIs get off to the idea that pledges do this.

i’m in a sorority here at UT and I did not get hazed. hazing gets taken pretty seriously in most greek orgs, most are genuinely trying to get new members that are similar to them in personalities and attitudes, hazing in my opinion is a very rare, and sad thing. if you want to discuss it feel free to send me an email. If you want to look at what frats and sororities have been disciplined for hazing go to [University of Texas at Austin - Office of the Dean of Students - Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education - Discipline Record](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/glie/disc.php)
