Which is harder to get in to generally speaking? Which school would you choose? I know this is a HC Forum so I expect some HC " bias" but I'm looking for some honest feedback on both schools if you have an opinion. Thanks in advance.

BC has a lower acceptance rate, but not by much. BC’s is 29/30% and HC’s is about 33% They are very different kinds of schools. I applied to and got into both this past year and chose HC over BC because I liked the small liberal arts feel. And in my opinion the academics were stronger at BC (plus BC seemed a preppy and a bit overrated).

My D will be attending HC this fall. Before going on the BC tour last year, she really thought BC would end up being her top choice. After we toured BC, she realized she wanted a small school that does not have a graduate school. Both schools have a lot to offer. Size is a big differentiator.

According to the Princeton Review

Academic Rating BC: 89 HC: 95

Selectivity Rating BC: 97 HC: 96

So academics tougher at HC but the school is just slightly easier to get into than BC.

Boston College is very nice but Holy Cross is quite beautiful. BC is spread across two campuses several miles apart. HC is all on one very walkable hilltop campus. BC’s Newton Campus is in a different town, but it is just a few minutes down the street. There is a different mailing address for the Newton campus, and there is a full service mailroom right next to the dining hall, Stuart, where students on Newton have mailboxes and where packages can be picked up and mail sent out.

The Newton bus is not a school bus, it is more similar to a city bus or the T. There are seats around the perimeter and a lot of room to stand in the middle. They run school busses continuously on game days from Newton to main campus to accommodate the students as well as the alumni who park there. There has to be a lot of busses since they are transporting 600 kids every day to the main campus. The bus runs extremely frequently around 8-9 when everyone is going to class, around every three minutes and goes straight from Newton to main gate of main and back. During other hours its more like 5-15 minutes and it makes several stops around the BC campus. BC runs a similar bus, the Commonwealth Ave bus, up and down Comm Ave to service many popular off-campus sites and apartments. There are overcrowding issues, usually from 8am-10am, when students are getting to classes and at 1,2,3,and 4, when students are returning from classes. The busses tend to get crowded wednesday nights (around 6:30) because students will be going to class for perspectives.

I have to agree that size is the main difference, however one may also wish to consider the Boston vs Worcester factor.

^ True. Worcestor’s not a very likeable city from what I’ve seen and heard when I visited HC and saw the surroundings, BUT HC’s beautiful campus makes up for that. It’s gorgeous! Plus, there’s shuttles that take you to Boston every weekend I think.

They have shuttles at HC to Boston, Providence and local shopping every weekend.

Typically Boston College stands out above Holy Cross. SAT scores, selectivity, and rankings all go in favor of BC…however I feel that HC is more challenging for students than BC…I heard HC only had a few kids who graduated HC with a 4.0 since 1970.

I feel like you could successfully argue both sides of this HC/BC debate; so if there is a difference academically it is minimal. BC is a large research institution and HC is a small liberal arts schools so it is hard to directly compare them rankings wise. Choosing one that is “better” seems to be very subjective.
