HCSSiM 2012

Anybody applying this year? Anyone get the IT yet?

I am planning on applying. I have yet to actually fill out the online application though

same ^ 10char

anyone else? how hard is it to get in?

^ I would also like to know how selective the program is. Also, how difficult is the IT? Do you need to have a lot of mathematical experience via AOPS, AMC competitions, etc.? I’ve always been very good at math, but I’m kind of inexperienced.

Same here Maximus, I always sucked at the AMC things because of the time constraints and freaking out a lot.

But from what I hear, it’s more laid back than the other camps?

Bump. Anyone hear back yet?

My kid is a 9th grader, waiting for the response from HSCCiM. we submitted application about 2 weeks ago.

I want to know about :
how is the camp life? how is the teachers or counselors? is the bed time strict?
we learned that the counselors at the Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) are like students and very laid back, and the bed time is basicly open (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/835472-my-experience-texas-state-honors-summer-math-camp.html?highlight=hsmc</a>)

I hope the counselors will help the students and the bed time is strict.

Anyone know about the PROMYS?

I attended last year. Haven’t been to any other math program (yet), but it’s pretty laidback. You get free time from lunch until 5 when you can do whatever you want. That said, staff definitely pays attention to who pays attention in class/puts effort into problem sets. For the bedtime, they enforce the 11:17 curfew pretty strictly on weekdays, but on Saturday nights you can stay up pretty much as late as you want.

But as someone who had little exposure to math outside of the classroom before HCSSiM, I found it to be both a rigorous and enjoyable experience.

Thank you Escrow, so can students play video games or on-line games in the afternoon?

Yeah, there’s wireless, so you can bring a laptop and play games or whatever if you want. I know other programs like SUMaC and PROMYS have a no-laptop policy. There are purposely no TVs to use at all, though.

Thanks Escrow. I wish they can enforce the no-laptop policy too.

I think I’m going to apply next year. I already have plans for this year. :)

@mathfan07, is there a reason you want them to enforce a bedtime and ban laptops? That’s kind of strange in my opinion. :D

@vs1994, Because I’m a parent, I want my kid focus more on math not on games/facebooks, and I want my kid got enough sleep time too. I think those are concerns of other parents too.

@mathfan07 Surely your son is old enough to figure out that sort of thing for himself though? I’m actually surprised that there is such a thing as enforced “bed times” at summer programs. If you are mature enough to go away to a summer program you should be capable of looking after yourself without parent or a substitution for one telling you when to go to bed.

bump… does anyone from hcssim 2011 know when they let you know if you’re in or not? i need to decide my summer plans ASAP

waiting too

Checking my e-mail, they got the last part of my application (teacher rec) on May 2. I got my decision by snail mail on May 19. So the 17 days thing is pretty accurate.

^Thanks!

Out of curiosity at people who applied:
How many problems did you solve?

Thanks for the information.
My kid’s application was submitted more than 17days now.
