I recently was accepted into Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. I have to make a decision between this and PROMYS (which I am still waiting on a decision). I was curious about the content matter of HCSSiM and the faculties.

Any other information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My son chose HCSSiM over PROMYS for this yr. Read about what both programs do on a daily basis (on their websites) and make the decision–it looks like PROMYS does more on-your-own work while HCSSiM does more group work and seminars and activities. HCSSiM looked better to us.

PROMYS and HCSSIM are very different. PROMYS, Ross and Texas Honors Mathcamp all focus on number theory (with the Ross program being the longest at 8 weeks), and PROMYS and Texas HSMC are 6 weeks (with some weekend activities). HCSSIM provides a variety of topics that will be covered, whereas Promys is in depth on one particular area of math. (I chose Texas HSMC (didn’t apply to Promys) over HCSSIM because I thought it would be good for research in future. Their program allows return campers to be part of a mentored team for a research project. Last year, the winning SIEMENs team came out of their program). Both Promys and HCSSIM seem excellent, but just depends on what you are looking for.
