Hi folks. I am taking my S, a rising jr. to camp in Canada next week and we have one day for a brief visit to RIT and Syracuse. Unfortunately, this is the big open house day at SU and we will miss the info session in the morning and will only be able to get the tour at 3:00. I am leaning toward a larger university over a more technical school for S on the outside chance that he should eventually decide against computer science. However, the other schools he is interested are a ways away, so I am not sure we will get back to SU unless he decides it is top on his list.

I will try to make arrangements to meet with someone from the Engineering school, but given that it is summer and I'm not sure how long the tour will take, I can't imagine there will be too many people there on a Friday that late in the day.

So, are there any tip you all might have for when our tour is over? I want him to get a good feel for the school and the area.

Wow your son is a rising junior and your already doing college visits with him? I am a rising junior as well and haven’t done that at all. Maybe I’m behind?

But anyways what are your sons interest? I’ve lived in Syracuse for 11 years and know the area well.

Each school at SU is very different and usually have their own recruiters. Call the engineering school today and see if they have some kind of program for your son that day (When we missed the Newhouse one, they let us watch the video and met individually with my D). There might be a student who would be willing to meet with your S.
SU in the summer is a very different place than when the students are there. Somehow, the gritty city is more obvious, so warn your son about this. I would definitely go to Armory Square in downtown to get a view of where the city is heading. Other than that, I’d stick to exploring the campus area.

Thanks. Syracusebound - we are really only visiting because its so close to where I have totake him for his camp. Seemed a waste to go all that way and not see the schools. I will take your suggestions twoparent, thanks!
