Assuming flights are running from the east coast Sunday, we will be visiting Miami. Anything special we should do while we are there? We will get ther Sunday afternoon. Any suggestions for places to eat where there will likely be many students? Anything we should check out on our own before the school's program on Monday? We will need to leave by 4 on Monday, so won't have much time there.
Thanks

If your student will be a business major, I’d plan to spend some time exploring the new Business School building. Even if your tour stops there, it may be worthwhile to check things out on your own. Food…Bagel and Deli would be on my list!!

As far as food, Bagel and Deli is a good choice. If you want an Italian dinner, try Paesanos! Mac 'n Joe’s is good for pub grub. Patterson’s on Spring street near the CVS and Hampton is great for breakfast/brunch. I’ve also been to Kona Bistro and Steinkellers for dinner - both were good. I haven’t been to Quarterbarrel, but friends have and said it was very nice.

You should definitely check out the Armstrong Student Center - brand new and absolutely gorgeous! The food court will be open, even on Sunday. The Farmer school is definitely state of the art, but on Sunday, while the building will be open, it will be basically dead as no classes are in session. You can look around, but will probably get more out of it on Monday. You can also head over to the King library, Goggin Ice Center and Rec Center and look around.

If you arrive during daylight, definitely drive around the town of Oxford near campus. One of the traditions of Miami is the signs on the houses rented by students. The houses are “named” and the students actually refer to the names rather than street addresses. You can buy a poster at the bookstores or look up pictures of the signs on the internet. The names tend to be a little naughty, and a few may be crude, many are very witty. One of my favorites, is on a house just off the intersection of Church and High Streets. “At Church and almost High”.

The Miami Bookstore at the Shriver Center is not open on Sundays. However, the DuBois and Follet bookstores on the uptown strip are both open on Sundays for any trinkets you may need since Monday may be rushed.

Have a great trip!

Hi 1214mom. I will be at the Make it Miami day on monday as well. We are driving from the chicago area. We already visited once, and now, going back to try and make a final decision. I love the campus…my son is on the fence. Looking forward to checking out the residence halls and the new student center.

Thanks perch1024. If my son gets invited to honors he will be more interested. Right now he’s not sure between 3 schools. Maybe we will see you there.

Mine is deciding between miami and butler ( waiting on regular decisions from vanderbilt, wash U, and Washington and lee too so those decisions may factor in later if he also gets any merit awards ). My son loves butler but with his merit award from there, it will still cost us double what miami will. HOPING he loves miami on Monday besides merit award, they offered him honors and university scholars and send him something weekly about the school. Today, a postcard from a current university scholar telling him about the program. I’m impressed that they seem to want him to accept.

I’m planning on taking my son for the 4/18 make it Miami day which is Good Friday. Will any students be on campus?

Chicagobear, I’ve taken down all your suggestions for food. Thanks. It looks like our day starts at the new student center. Any other suggestions for what to do Sunday, since Monday will be rushed?

@ngutierrez… Easter weekend is a normal 2-day weekend as far as the university goes. Classes will be in session on Good Friday.
Students who can easily get home for the weekend may be headed home but a fair number of students should be on campus given the proximity to semester’s end and finals. My daughter will be on campus and not with us. I doubt that she will be alone.

@GunnerDad thanks so much good to know given we had no options due to his hockey schedule

1214mom - sorry I missed your request. Mrs Bear and I have been to in Napa this weekend. Glad to heat your visit has been going well.

I would have rather been in Napa than Ohio, but Miami is a serious contender for where my son will wind up.
Make It Miami Day was not particularly well organized. It may have been the first of the year, and it was the first in the new student center. As my son said, the visit only improved his opinion of the school. We visit Indiana in mid-March, and it will have to be quite impressive to top Miami, especially given the cost difference.
