Headshots

I know that there are always people who are looking for new headshots so thought I'd share with my CC friends. Last night, a very good friend sent me a link to the website of a photographer in NYC to show me the headshots he'd done of a friend of hers (an actor I also know). We were looking through his site 'together' while chatting online. Both of us have seen a lot of headshots 'in our day' :), but these were truly impressive. I had to admit that some of them were probably close to the most unique and beautiful headshots I've ever seen. He has succeeded in capturing something in those faces that is incredibly expressive. I was impressed and his prices seem very reasonable. If anyone would like the link to his website, let me know by PM, or preferably, email, and I'll send it to you. Even if you'd just like to look at it for fun, it's worth it!

Let me make it clear that I have no connection to this photographer, nor does my friend (other than the fact that we both have a mutual friend who has used him). We don't know him, have never used him ourselves, and obviously have no financial incentive to recommend him. Just passing this along as a service to anyone who may be in need of new headshots or who is just interested in seeing some beautiful photos.

I am glad there is a head shot post!! We will have to get head shots for my son this summer and I was wondering should they be black & white or color? i was going to have the photographer take them during his senior picture session.
Thanks!

Most places want color headshots, but I had one school I auditioned for request a B&W headshot. But friends of mine who are auditioning in the city said all they use is color and if they need a B&W it is very easy to change it on the computer and print it out, so they carry around a couple B&Ws just in case.

If anyone is in NYC and looking for someone to do their headshots I highly recommend Robert Mannis. He took mine last summer and he is wonderful, and well-known in the city. I have gone on auditions and the auditors immediately asked me if these were Robert Mannis headshots haha! His website is RobertMannisPhotography.com He offered a student discount for me because I was at Circle in the Square over the summer, so I’m not sure if the discount is just for Circle students or if it is for ANY college students with ID. So check on that, it was $100 off.

Definitely color - black and white says old and out of touch. Even in NY it’s all color. Also, make sure you use a professional headshot photographer, anything else will not do. And, I’m sorry to say that in most instances your first set of headshots will be okay, not great. It takes a little knowledge to figure out what you’re trying to “say” with your headshot, it’s not anything anyone can tell you, it’s part of the exploration of a beginning professional actor. So try not to spend too much money on them.

Backstage.com message forum is a good source for photographers as is Reproductions.com.'s website with many, many photographers portfolios.

color headhots are definitalty what you want. Black and white are very out of date/

A follow-up on my original post. I was overwhelmed by requests for this photographer’s website and I think I’ve replied to everyone’s request now. If there’s anyone who still hasn’t received the link from me, please shoot me another email. I didn’t mean to miss you but it’s possible with the number of emails and PMs I received that that happened.

Just wondering…Besides the actual headshots, is there anything else we should order? Business cards? Post cards? There are so many options! What is actually used?

Postcards and similar items are useful for professionals to keep in touch with agents and directors. They aren’t necessary for college students who aren’t working professionally, if that’s what you’re asking.

alwaysamom, your mailbox is full as I would like to the New York rec, too!

PS - We have an excellent studio in Chicago that specializes in actors. Anyone can PM me if you are heading to the midwest for school and need a great photographer.

ccsmom, I’ve forwarded the link to you. Sorry for the full mailbox. I really wish CC would allow for more stored PMs!

Hmmm, I don’t see any PMs and my mailbox has some space. Would appreciate if you could try that again.

Just came home from viewing our daughter’s headshots! Thank you so much for your recommendation. Both my 19 year old and 14 year old had their pictures taken. We are very happy with the results. A friend joined my daughters for the day of shooting. We took advantage of an excellent rate for both the photos and makeup/hair because all 3 girls were photographed together.

You’re welcome, uskoolfish. Glad that it worked out! :)

cant send a PM…

I’d also love to find out who the headshot photographer you’re talking about is! :)

I’m going to ask anyone who would like a link to the headshot photographer’s website to send me an email by clicking on my username and using the dropdown menu. It’s easier to do it that way than for me to try to keep my PM box clear. Thanks!
