Heallth Insurance

So how does it work in college? Do you have to buy the university's insurance or what?

Thanx in advance

I assume it varies by school. At ucla, all students are automatically given SHIP, which is the student health plan. It's ~$200/quarter. If you have adequate insurance already, you can waive SHIP.

Does anybody know anything about EyeMed? I think one is supposed to have EyeMed along with USHIP because USHIP does not NEARLY cover eye care.

eyemed is in the USHIP package... you're allowed one general eye exam per school year and you get some discounts on lenses and frames (assuming you go to an optometrist that accepts eyemed insurance)

How do we get reimbursed by our insurance company?

reimbursed for what?

Great...........................

I waived ship, but I still used a lot of health services here, which added up to 200-300 dollars. I'm just wondering if we can get reimbursed for that.

dont they take other insurance? did you not present your insurance card when you received those services?

i think your question is best answered by your insurance company because every company does things differently, so call the customer service number on your insurance card.

UCLA takes other health insurance as a substitute for USHIP, but the requirements are strict (e.g. the provider has to be within a certain proximity to the UCLA campus or something)

Evelyn_rose,

Did you have those services in ASHE? If you did, you probably won't be able to get a reimbursment b/c ASHE does NOT accept any insurance other than SHIP.

Yep. It cost me $30 dollars to see the doctor because I was suffering from the unsightly symptoms of food poisoning. :(

Yeah, they were in Ashe :[

does it always take a long time to secure appointments in the ashe center? i tried going there for an eye exam and was told that i had to wait for an entire month for an appointment. this was when school barely started in the fall quarter too.

is this normal?

a month?! good lord.

so if you waived ship, you obviously (or should) have other adequate insurance, so... why don't you use that? Depending on what type of insurance you have, you might be able to retroactively bill them for stuff you paid for and have them reimburse you. But as has been said already, Ashe does not deal directly with any other insurance companies.

If you have an HMO like Kaiser, you might be SOL, since there is a Kaiser hospital right down the 10 freeway and they probably expect you to go there for all non-emergent (not at an ER) care

If we do not waive SHIP, do we automatically get SHIP or do we have to sign up for it at some point?

Yes, you automatically get SHIP.

If we want dental coverage with ship, what should we do and when?

*USHIP Basic does not include Dental Care benefits. USHIP PLUS is a voluntary dental plan that can be purchased online during the fee payment period each term to obtain dental care coverage. This is the only difference between USHIP Basic and USHIP PLUS coverage. The undergraduate Dental Plan will require enrollment for the academic policy year or when student is first eligible.

The Enrollment Deadline for the USHIP PLUS( Dental Buy-up) Plan is September 20 for fall, December 20 for winter, and March 20 for spring/summer. The undergraduate Dental Plan will require enrollment for the academic policy year or when student is first eligible.
