Health Alert

For those few parents who frequent the board, you will no doubt be interested to know there is a case of meningococcal bacterial meningitis on campus. Details are available on insidevandy.com. In an earlier Vanderbilt appreciation thread, I offered what I believe is an objective opinion of the school and mentioned some of its strengths and weaknesses. One of its absolute strengths, IMO, is the way that vital information such as this is communicated to students, faculty, staff, and parents in a timely manner. If you guys are like me, you try to avoid "helicoptering" with regard to inquiring about time management, laundry, etc.; however, I felt compelled to reinforce with D that at the first sign of any symptom she should get herself to student health or hospital. Although she lives in Towers (where the affected student lives), we know that risk is minimal, but.....
For those who are parents of hs seniors considering Vandy, know that this is obviously a very unusual occurence. Usually the affliction your student has to worry about is allergies, particularly in the spring when "arboretum disease" strikes. Although Vanderbilt's designation as a national arboretum is generally a selling point for the beautiful campus, for those prone to allergies it can make for a miserable spring, particularly during the freshman year!

Thank you very much for posting this. Last week I sent my son a reminder that he should not ignore signs of feeling unwell. I think I will send him another reminder.

I'll do the same - thanks, VU0609. My d is also in Towers. Though she's been immunized, we've seen all too many stories recently about immunized students who still develop this disease. Here's hoping the affected student will soon be well.

I happened to hear about the student who is ill, but even today I don't see anything on the Vanderbilt website (homepage) about this. I will check out insidevandy.com.
It does appear the university notified their students swiftly, and that is the most important thing.
My freshman D is very, very happy she chose Vanderbilt. It seems to be an excellent school and she seems to have found her place.

Try this. It was under News on the homepage, yesterday.
