health and APPEARANCE of midshipmen

"Frosts my cookies"? lol I like that one.

Just lose the weight...if he's motivated enough, he will.

How dare you ever question my motivation. You have no idea.

I thought if you failed a body fat test at USNA you were in the same boat as those who failed the PRT and risked getting booted.

That's the way it used to be...

thats the way it is in all of the navy, the PRT consists of two parts, the PFA and the body weight. PFA is the run/situps/pushups. The body weight is the trivial portion. The navy has been using the same system for 50 or so years now and I am sure that science has progressed a bit since then.

I wouldn’t worry about being slightly above USNA weight standards on I-day because Plebe Summer will quickly resolve that. During Plebe Parents’ Weekend, most parents, including myself, were shocked at how lean their plebes were. It’s not uncommon to lose 20-30 pounds over Plebe Summer. (I’m sure this is true at all of the service academies.) I would be more concerned about candidates who are underweight on I-day. The only plebes I saw on Parents’ Weekend (at the end of Plebe Summer) who weren’t in the best shape of their lives, were the kids on crutches. Try not to hurt yourselves—it’s so pathetic to see the injured plebes scrambling on their crutches to keep up with their squads—and they do it! (Also saw many injured on crutches and with casts the day following Sea Trials at the end of Plebe Year.)

usna09mom - I have no doubt that Fergsonfire will drop 25 - 30 lbs - can't wait to see him at parents weekend since I couldn't make it to I-day. Any idea how I find out what squad he is in??

Trust me the whole issue of body fat came up with my son. My son is on the football team and prior to our official visit in December- he beefed up to 200lbs not sure how he did that- also can't imagine being so excited to be 200 lbs. Due to the fact that he is only 5'10 we got the first paper on his body fat in February. Filled out the forms- 2 times and submitted them. Of course got another form in the packet of stuff we got from the Academy- On I-Day his weight was 183- which is more normal for him. I am hoping that he doesn't loose too much weight because 2 a days start during plebe summer. I want the weight on him as he plays. I keep sending healthy foods in my care packages so that he will have something to quickly eat to keep on the weight.

Hi All,

Latest update - Fergsonifie has lost 22 lbs as of last week...........

I wonder if they'll let an old alumni reattend Plebe Summer? I could do with losing a few pounds. :D

Peskemom, That was painful to watch...or should I say listen to. I am not so sure I want to bring my family anywhere near that place...Just kidding. Not even that video clip will keep us away!!!

me neither
not even a cholera epidemic!
:-)

OUCH! My daughter was the one in M company that they panned in on and she hacked...... Cant decide if I was thankful to see it or heartbroken. They all look so tired.....

On the home stretch....Just 10 days till ppw!

It was hard to hear her hack, but she looked determined!

My son is starting his 2/C year at Navy and he was thin to begin with. He started I-Day at 150# and he's 6 ft. Believe me, he looked VERY thin by PPW. But he also looked so determined and capable and so pleased with himself for having completed plebe summer. Yes, some kids will lose weight...remain calm. Buy them pizza, steak, whatever their little hearts desire! They have worked hard, but the Academy has an excellent system for watching out for these kids. As an old ER nurse, I made a point of talking to the medical people there and they are truly excellent. So, don't panic. It's easy to get caught up in the littlest details because you don't have anything else to do!

Your Mid will let you know what they want to do/eat on PPW. Some will want to sleep, some will want to tell you all about it. I recall being told that we would be "shocked" at the change in our son when we saw him PPW. I was concerned.....I actually liked the kid I had left there, I really didn't want to see him become something he's not. But the changes were subtle and he remains the sensitive, caring kid he has always been, just a little thinner and somewhat wiser about himself.

Congratulations to all the Class of 2010 Mids and parents! Give yourself a pat on the back for making it through as well....sometimes I think it's tougher on the parents than on the kids.

I'm 5 feet ZERO!!!! (the absolute minimum for women, thank god)

I'll be applying this fall. :)

FergisMom, how'd our dear Fergs look when you saw him? Waiting on your report! :) Hope he was well & happy.

Good luck to you mellow! The true measure of power lies not in the size of the power but the use of that power.

Hi Jamzmom,

Fergs aka now know as "Gramps" looked fantastic!! Thanks for asking! He is doing great and very excited as he got into the Arabic class that he was hoping for. Now both he and his sister will be able to talk in Arabic - I think I better take a class as well!!

PPW was a whirlwind - the mids looked so sharp!! Can't wait to hear what their first prank is going to be..........

The only not so fun part about the weekend was bringing home plebe hack - LOL - all in all a small price to pay for seeing my mid. So sorry I didn't get to meet you all at dinner - especially you Zaphod since you were the surprise guest!!

I was beginning to think we were the only ones who came home sick. I've been out of it all week. UGH! How they kept going... Our son lost 15 pounds and was looking rather thin. Hopefully he will start putting the weight back on now that he is feeling better and has passed his germs on...

Glad everyone had a great time with their plebes!
