Health Care, Mandatory?

I'm under the Healthy Families health care until I turn 19. Can I go with that for the rest of the year or do I have to buy UCSC's health care? It's so expensive..

no you can waive out of the ucsc healthcare plan, there should be a message about how to do it on your portal

U should have received a message on ur portal. If ur gonna use ur own health insurance, u have to do waive the uship plan and register ur own plan. U have to do this before sept 1 or else u will be automatically enrolled in the uship plan. Follow the instructions carefully in ur message on how to waive uship.

I didn’t get any message from my portal, a post card came in the mail from UCSC about USHIP. Thank you guys lots!!

Healthcare is now mandatory for all UC students. However, they will allow you to waive USHIP if your current health insurance provides you with a comparable insurance plan. The easiest way to waive it is to fill out the waiver form online (should be on your portal but you can google it) or you can go to the health center and fill out the forms with someone there.

Anybody know how much the UC Santa Cruz health-care cost? Does financial aid pay for this or what?

EDIT:So its $481 a quarter? or $481 an entire year?

per quarter

That’s ridiculously expensive! And my parents and I thought it was for an entire year, LOL.

I was pretty sure they include it as part of your tuition charges (that huge 30k per year sum) Soo, my folks weren’t really swayed by the price. The figure everyone who’s in charge of making the prices at the UC’s is a royal ******bag. Orientation prices, for example, were some of the grossly overpriced tickets I have ever seen.

Does this cover you for the summer as well? or only while you are in school?

As long as you are enrolled Spring quarter, the insurance covers you through the end of Summer.

CruzCare is only $75 per quarter.

Quote from website:

"If you choose to waive USHIP coverage consider purchasing CruzCare, an inexpensive pre-paid access plan for busy students seeking on-campus health care. For $75 a quarter (billed automatically to the student’s account) CruzCare provides unlimited Student Health Center visits for care of illness or injury, including in-house Health Center lab and X-ray. For students waiving USHIP, CruzCare is the best and most cost effective way to take advantage of the on-campus convenience and college health expertise available at the UCSC Student Health Center. "

I called. It’s $451 a year. I’m going to take that, because I have Healthy Families and its not going to cover nothing on school. I’m going to have to find some clinic downtown Santa Cruz. Tooo much. So I’ll just take their health insurance.

School insurance is $451 a year? I just looked at my portal and last year I was charged $383 each quarter for USHIP. So unless they actually lowered prices for something…

Wait…I thought it was $451 a quarter…isn’t it?

The lady I talked to told me it was $451.Maybe you guys should try calling? I’m not sure. This is getting confusing now.

[UC Santa Cruz - Financial Aid - Welcome!](http://www2.ucsc.edu/fin-aid/ugradbudget1011.shtml)

They list 2010 health insurance as being 1317 for the whole year here. $451x 3 quarters = $1353.

I’d say it’s more likely they raised it $36 than cut it but hundreds of dollars. I’m positive it’s $451 per quarter.

I canceled my health insurance both my freshman and soph year, but I remember my rate (which is probably different than yours) was around ~$300 a quarter. Then again, we didn’t have cruzcare or any of those options.
