Okay so apparently UCSB has a policy that makes it mandatory to enroll in their Helath Coverage unless you have other Health Coverage, UCSB's is $2,500 per year give or take and that's a big expenditure for me.

Any ideas on more affordable health coverage that would allow me to waive the UCSB Mandatory Health Coverage?

I'm independent my EFC is 0 and I just don't see it as necessary to pay $2,500 per year for that.

Lmao @Cayton that ended March 31st and the next cycle starts in November so I guess that’s not an option. Am I going to jail now? Lol I thought it was the law that you MUST have health coverage now.

@xxcapital I don’t think Medi-Cal qualifies :/

@onehandedred - I don’t think it’s offered at UCSB.

I’ve asked numerous times about grants and scholarships there and they essentially said if you need more money take out a loan and if you need even more fill out a cost of attendance increase form and get more unsubsidized loans.

@xxcapital - I meant I don’t think that UCSB counts that as the minimum coverage required because it doesn’t cover much and they have a higher standard.

Any thoughts on other options just in case?

Also, you’re not going to jail if you don’t have health care coverage. You just get penalized as in you gotta pay a fee for every year you don’t have medical. And this penalty multiplies every year. So if I remember right, $99 for this year, $399 next year or 1% income this year, 2% next year

The type of coverage an individual needs to have to meet the individual responsibility requirement under the Affordable Care Act. This includes individual market policies, job-based coverage, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, TRICARE and certain other coverage.

I mean the national healthcare counts it as minimum coverage.

UC SHIP is a student-focused health insurance package providing strong benefits for all enrolled University of California students at the following campuses: Hastings College of the Law, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz.

LOL goddamn it Berkeley/SB

But I think having health insurance is required to attend isn’t it? The school doesn’t want to be responsible for you since I would think you’re technically under their care, whether you want to be or not.

UCSB shouldn’t have standards that high or anything. Not everyone who goes there are “hundred-thousanaires” so it would make sense to have requirements set at the same level that the government sets it. But that’s just me, call in to make sure so you can live worry-free!

@BurntCorpse - I’m on my own, I make under 16k a year and I have Medi-Cal but I’m not sure that’s enough coverage that UCSB requires, I’m emailing them now.
