Health Insurance for college students

Some plans sold through colleges are pretty bare-bones, so if you're contemplating switching your kid from your family plan to the college plan, check on that. It should cover hospital expenses (not just a per diem per hospital day), have some kind of prescription drug coverage, some kind of mental health coverage and...this is REALLY important... not impose a ceiling on the amount of medical costs it will pay. If your child, God forbid, should come down with a catastrophic illness, the last thing you need is for your insurer to say, "sorry, we said we'd pay up to $250,000 and we've done that, so now you're on your own." And, believe me, a catastrophic illness can hit $250,000 frighteningly easily.
