I’ve been accepted to Hamilton (my top choice!) but they mentioned nothing about Health insurance in my FA status. Does that mean I’ll have to pay extra $1700 or whatever? I don’t get it because Hamilton is supposed to meet 100% of need but this way they won’t.
Contact the school and ask.
Health insurance is often not included in the cost of attendance.
Contact the college…and ask them about this.
@AbdelHady Also, you may be able to get a waiver if you are covered under your parents’ plan. But you should find this out directly when you call the college.
You might be able to get a waiver if your parent insurance plan meets the college requirements.
You need info about the parent olan to askmthat question. If you are attending college in a different state, and your parent plan is an HMO in your home state, it might not provide themciverage the college requires in the college state.
health insurance is usually not added because every family’s situation is different. Some families have existing health insurance that they will be able to use at school. Families that do not have insurance that can be used at school will have to pay for insurance as a loan, out of pocket or a combination as a grant from the school and a loan/family paying out of pocket.
All students must have adequate health insurance in order to attend school. As an international student, if the school does not offer you a loan, then your family will have to pay the difference.
the current cost of the plan is ~1700
I’m an international student yeah, but paying extra $1700 will be a problem. I’ll contact the college and ask them to make some modifications to my FA package. Will they make the necessary modifications so that I will be able to afford the college?
Insurance is not a Qualified Educational Expense, and many schools do not include it in their packages because it is money paid to an outside vendor.
Does your package cover everything else? Airline tickets, personal expenses? If so, they might include insurance but if they are only covering costs at the school, insurance may not be included. Domestic students would be able to take the government loans to cover insurance.
Everyone pays the health fee or uses a health waiver.
Your travel and personal expenses? You seriously want the college to fund 100% of your expenses?
If you can’t earn $1700, between now and the fall, then good luck wherever you land.
Do find out what is needed from the college, and what the deadline is to submit the paperwork for the waiver, or you might get billed for the insurance.
No, the college will not cover everything else. I’ll pay some of the net cost. The college told me that I’ll be paying all that I indicated I’ll pay, but mentioned nothing about health insurance. This way I’ll be paying MORE than I said I can afford.
Most people pay MORE than they say they can, or want to, or can really afford. Having health insurance is a requirement.
You don’t get to say how much you can afford to pay. The colleges determine how much they EXPECT you to pay…and what you say you can pay has no bearing on the calculation…at…all.
Looks like you’re an int’l student. You’ll need to ask about insurance, The school may expect you to earn/save over summer to pay for that.
No one is forcing you to go to that university. If you can’t afford it, you don’t have to attend.
??
When applying for aid, you don’t get to “say what you can afford.” You don’t get to give a number that they will respect.
You provide financial info and then the school decides what you should pay.
You’ll also have int’l travel costs, right?
Actually…there is a question on the Profile asking how much you think you can pay.
BUT that response is NOT used to compute need based aid awards…at all.
Looks like you ae narrowing down to 2 schools. Is likely both will require you to pay for your health insurance. If that is the deal-breaker, call the schools to inquire.
Some schools will, in fact, cover student health insurance for financial aid recipients, if their family insurance doesn’t cover them to the required standard. I do not know how common or uncommon that is, my kid’s school would and it says that in a PDF file buried in their financial aid web site.
I couldn’t find that info for Hamilton using google, so if I were you I’d call them and ask. It can’t hurt, then you will know one way or the other.
