I am transferring to Florida State University this fall. My financial aid should be good to cover my tuition and fees, but I need to cut expenses wherever possible as I will be on a tight budget. I thought of getting health insurance from a third party provider (e.g. blue cross/ blue shield Florida), but I am not sure if this is very convenient. Would this significantly reduce my insurance costs? How would it compare to the health plan offered by Florida State?
University insurance is usually cheaper than private pay. Its because university insurance is a group policy and the group is young bulletproof college kids.
You can check places like Florida Blue (BCBS of Florida’s name), or United or the like, but honestly the FSU plan is probably going to be the cheapest option out there anymore.
Is it possible to get coverage under your parents by any chance? It doesn’t sound like it, but I wanted to make sure that wasn’t being explored. I believe that even with the latest changes to the ACA you can remain on your parent’s plan until you turn 26.
Thank you for the replies. I checked the blue cross/blue shield website, and it seems the best option would be to go for the year round insurance provided by the University. Not sure if that was the case in the past, but it is cheaper now (compared to bc/bs).
Shortnuke, I wouldn’t have been able to get insurance from my parents, but appreciate the information. Perhaps it will save me some paperwork as well.
