Mass waived my kid’s NY-based insurance, I had to check to be sure there were doctors near her school.
I’d say so. My kid’s school explicitly says they would pay it if hers wasn’t sufficient. Some schools offer additional loans for it (Emory), some may pay it if you apply (Smith), I think most just add it to the bill.
Haha have to smile. There are doctors near every school in Massachusetts! It’s the land of healthcare! (Well except maybe Williams is out there in a distant corner.))
I purchased the school plan for the first couple of years D was away at school 2009 - 2011). Although she was in-state, my plan from work was a fairly limited HMO. When my company switched to Aetna, I was able to drop the school plan because there were providers upstate. When she destroyed her ACL in a skiing accident in 2012, I was able to get her emergency care upstate but we had the surgery done at home when the semester ended. She then returned to school and attended PT with a provider near school.
I am about to undertake finding providers for S17 near his SUNY town. He’s healthy but I want to have the name of a regular doctor or an Urgent care for him to see if anything out of the ordinary arises and the health center is closed or can’t handle it.
One thing - make sure that you do the waiver paperwork on time and correctly. D took care of it the last year and messed it up by waiving only the first semester. It took me weeks to undo it - and I had to because I didn’t want to spend extra money for a school health plan when she was going to be at home the final semester student teaching.
