Did anyone else receive the postcard in the mail over the weekend about the new health insurance requirement? In recent years, we were required to pay for the university health care costs but now looks like we are able to opt out if we have proof of coverage. Am I reading this correctly??

Yes. S and I just did the waiver together online. It’s a very simple process - just have your insurance card handy.

I looked into this further. If I’m reading it correctly, it looks like we will still be charged the health care services fee both semesters. This is a new charge for insurance coverage that is now required, unless you opt out by showing proof of insurance.

Yes, you need to show proof of insurance or you will be charged the fee. D went online today and took care of her information. It did not take long.

We opted out. Checked with our insurance company first to make sure she would be covered. Not an issue at all.

When I was at NSO, the health service session addressed this fee. I believe they explained it as the standard health charge that everyone has to pay is used for routine visits to the health center. It is a lump fee for routine issues. They now require everyone to have major medical in case of a hospital visit or accident. They will only have to use the major (private) health insurance if your child requires a visit to the hospital, x-rays etc. If you don’t have private insurance you may purchase it through them at a group rate. They want you to submit your private insurance info to make sure that emergency visits would be covered. If you don’t have it or submit it, they will charge you for theirs. I hope I understood it correctly.
