Health insurance?

Is the freshman supposed to purchase his Health Insurance from his home town before orientation next week? thanks.

My understanding is there are two different health insurance fees. First, you have to pay the student health fee which allows you to use student health services on campus. If you have major medical insurance coverage from your parent(s), bring proof of the coverage (need a letter, insurance card) to USC student health. USC student health has a review process of your coverage. If you are covered with your parent(s), you will save the thousand or so dollars. If you are not covered and cannot show proof of coverage, you have to pay for the USC medical coverage. Also, look up the dental/orthodontal plans if that applies to you.

If you are showing proof of insurance is it alright to bring a photocopy of the insurance card? Also, what do you mean by needing a "letter" mdcissp?

Here is some information straight from USC's website. Google is your friend.

<a href="http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/ins.index.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/Health_Center/ins.index.shtml</a></p>

Nikara, if you live on campus, you can only waive the health insurance fee, right? They told me I still needed to pay the health center fee even though I have outside insurance.

everyone pays the health center fee, on campus or not, and you don't have to deal w/ insurance going to the health center

you can waive the health insurance if you're already covered, I just gave them my insurance cards (which you should always carry with you anyway)

they made copies of them for their records, so possibly fax or photocopies might be good enough for them. but I would verify with them for that.

When my husband went to orientation, someone at USC asked him to show proof with a letter that our son has full health insurance coverage. I called our health insurance co. and had the company e-mail us a letter saying that our son was covered. My husband supplied the e-mail letter showing the proof of coverage. Even with the letter, my husband was told that the proof (letter) had to be reviewed at USC before being exempt from the university requirement to have medical coverage insurance. Since my son was not billed for the medical coverage, I assume the letter passed the USC review.
