Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Hey everyone!

I'm considering either a future in medicine or a future doing public health. As of right now, I am leaning towards becoming a doctor. I understand all the hard work and time it will take.

I have been accepted into the University of Southern California's Health Promotion and Disease Prevention undergraduate program.

Here's a link about the program:
<a href="http://www.usc.edu/schools/medicine/departments/preventive_medicine/divisions/behavior/education/bachelors/%5B/url%5D">http://www.usc.edu/schools/medicine/departments/preventive_medicine/divisions/behavior/education/bachelors/</a></p>

I love how it provides me with so many options for the future. And all the options are things I have considered doing.

BUT, is this a pre-med major that will help me get into a medical school I want? Will majoring in something else like biology improve my chances?

To me, it looks great. There are small classes and many opportunities for research and work. Los Angeles also offers many opportunities for the things I want to do.

Have any of you heard about this program? What do you think about it? Even if you have not, what is your opinion?

I have searched online for a while and have found very little information. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hm, I'm a current freshman at USC, and I have some friends who are HPDP majors. Although I'm not one myself, I just took a look at the requirements, and it seems like a pretty good premed major. I'm saying this because a lot of the major reqs overlap with the premed ones. From what I've gathered, no one major is considered a "better" major than another for med school (though a science-related one would obviously prepare you better in the sciences); just make sure that you get all the premed coursework done.

In general, I haven't heard anything bad about the major, except for the fact that since it's based at Keck, the advisors aren't available very often here at UPC. Hope that helps!
