<p>I am currently attending a community college and I intend on transferring to USC. Aside from their smaller population and family like alumni, I was also intrigued by the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention major. </p>
<p>Does anyone know about this major or is anyone in this major? If so, would this be a better major than bio for pre-med students?</p>

<p>I am so glad that you are interested in the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Studies (HP) Program, a part of USC’s Department of Preventive Medicine. The B.S. Health Promotion major provides excellent preparation for students considering careers as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physician assistants, optometrists, researchers, public health advocates, or professionals in allied health fields. Some of our students have also chosen to use the major as a foundation for graduate study in health law or health journalism. Still others have chosen to begin careers as nutritionists, wellness consultants, and health educators immediately after they graduate.</p>
<p>HP will absolutely prepare you for medical school. The majority of HP students are pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, or go on to pursue master's degrees in public health. While there is no formal advantage to choosing HP, our students who apply to graduate programs are very successful, as they not only have completed the pre-requisite science classes, but they also have a strong understanding of health and wellness as a whole. Additionally, HP students are required to complete at least two units of directed research, where students work one-on-one with a faculty member to conduct research in an area of interest to them. This research is valuable experience on their application and can lead to a great recommendation letter.</p>
