My kid is interested in the health science major on the pre-PA or pre-med track. I noticed the sample plan of study had 2 coops in 5 years. Is it possible to do 2 coops in 4 yrs while still fulfilling the reqs for pre-PA or pre-med? Same question for 3 coops in 5 yrs? Just wondering if 5 yrs is the minimum for that major.
My D has the same idea; just admitted. My D called and spoke to an advisor in the Bouve college and was informed that these are simply ‘sample plans’; a guide as to what to expect, not necessarily what needs to followed. Meaning, any combination of Co-Ops within X years can be constructed based on the students schedule. (Some students opt to Co-Op every summer session (I, II) rather than during the Fall or Spring term; other choose both, and some choose none at all. In all, she was told, get the courses, pass them to get the credits and fill in Co-Ops as you see your career path takes you. I would suggest having you or your kid call the Bouve college for this type of information if you want more clarity.
I’m in Bouve and have a couple friends on pre-med tracks. One is a freshman health science major and is planning on doing 2 coops and finishing in 4 years. Another is a Psych major (College of Science) and planning on doing 4 1/2 years, 2 coops (she cut out some summers). I know another student who I believe is a health science major who is a graduating 4th year, did 2 coops and is heading to PA school this fall. In short- neu is all about you being in charge of your own education. You can pretty much do what you want!
Yup, co-op is pretty flexible for most majors. (A few like engineering will put you on a specific co-op cycle to ensure that the students are evenly distributed.) In most cases (including health science and college of science), you can pick any time you want to do co-ops and change your co-op plan at any point. I came in planning to do 3.5 years and 1 co-op, but ended up sticking around to do 5 years, 2 co-ops, picked up a minor in a completely new field, and got really involved in research.
Thanks for all the responses. Glad to hear the various options and flexibility.
