<p>I heard somewhere that top MBA programmes don't care about where you went to school or your major, rather your GPA and GMAT and your work experience. Now, I'll concede that one's major is relatively unimportant (though how an English major is the same as a Math major is beyond me), but surely they care about the prestige of the institution?</p>

<p>To clarify, this was said in the context that everybody understands that a 4.0 from Podunk is the intellectual equivalent of a 3.5 from HYP, but it's actually better to be the 4.0 from Podunk because it's the number that matters. The raw number.</p>

<p>I think that may be truer of undergraduate admissions. A 4.0 or close to it seems be most important no matter the rigor of the coarse load or caliber of the hs. Many colleges recalculate gpa so that AP and Honors classes carry the same weight as non AP and non Honors classes. I would be surprised if this also applied to grad schools. But there certainly may be some truth to it, ie some grad schools.</p>
