Im a senior in high school and plan to go into hedge fudning or IBanking after college. What major whould you recommend i follow - economics or business?

Major in getting into an Ivy.

im in UChicago and Stern

hedge funding? ... you mean hedge funds? try applied math ... hedge funds are extremely numbers intensive.

people think that Wall St. automatically loves econ majors which is totally wrong. econ is considered a "lightweight" major - besides at the college level its way too basic and theoretical to have any realistic application in the daily life of a banker (save, perhaps, someone doing macro research)... for instance, if you are asked to take a bunch of financials and do a major number crunch session on them over the course of a weekend, what is more likely to help you:

A) Knowing that taxable income elasticity is best illustrated by the Laffer Curve
B) Knowing how to calculate a company's Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) and use that to perform a Discounted Cash Flow analysis (DCF)

The majority of representation in Front Office for IB tends to be the most elite colleges, HYPMS all the way, whereas Hedge Funds draw a wider range of colleges and majors... (Yes, even though they earn more.)

So if economics isn't the "best" major to have, then what else would be helpful?

Math. Finance.
