Hedrick Summit & Meal Plans (yes I read the sticky)

Hey CC,

I received my housing offer and got what I wanted: a double.
I have taken the virtual tour on their website, but I'd like some input on current students/alumni about their opinion on Hedrick summit. I have heard Hedrick is a bit up the hill, so the walk can be pretty tedious, but that's fine with me.

I'm more curious about atmosphere/social life, SIZE/SPACE, and how close it is to things like eateries, etc.

Also, I'm stuck debating between the 14P and 19P. I like the idea of a weekly carry-over, I'm just not sure if I'll eat 19 times a week, ever...and I am an OOS student, so I won't be heading anywhere over weekends, unless it's during break.

Thanks for everyone's input in advance!

Hedrick Summit is as up the hill as it gets. You’ll be walking the most out of anyone living in the dorms. That said, HS is a nice building. The rooms are a good size for a plaza. Definitely larger than your usual residence hall, but on par with other plazas like Rieber Terrace or Vista (and larger than De Neve). Overall a nice, clean building with cool atmosphere, though overall a bit quiet (relaxing). I think all the doubles in HS are shared bathrooms so your room will be connected to another double through a bathroom (doors between rooms do not lock, but toilet stall and shower stall do). Socially it depends on the floor and the RA and the student group. Nobody can tell you how social it’ll be, but plazas do not preclude being social. It is a highly variable thing. HS is really only close to Hedrick Dining Hall. Rieber’s dining hall (Feast) and Rendezvous Cafe are not far (all good choices). Covel/Sunset village eateries are a small bit out of the way to get to, but done in a few minutes. There’s just one huge slope between Hedrick and Sunset Village. You don’t have to eat 19 times a week; you can save extra swipes for pizzas or have a party with cafe food. OOS might be better to get 19P if you ask me, unless you’re really a light eater.

14P is enough for a regular person, 19P if you have alot of family/friends/are a 7 ft bodybuilder. But bear in mind the regular 19 meal plan is cheaper than the 14P plan. Summit is really nice as long as you’re a bit away from the singles. From my experience some of the freshmen love to go party in the single lounges (note this will not apply to every single lounge and varies depending on the type of people living in the lounges). There may be loud music/drinking/etc. How social your floor is varies alot depending on the people who you will be sharing the floor with. The rooms are rather on the large side of the spectrum when compared with other on-campus accommodations. Like phospholipase has said, there are plenty of on campus-dining selections, and westwood isn’t impossibly far away (it’s not going to be that much farther than if you live somewhere else on-campus).

Thank you all for the input!!

Quick additional question, if I get 19P or 14P and decide it’s not the right fit, can I change meal plans at the end of a quarter?

You can change your meal plan at any point during the quarter, although it cost a fee.
