I thought that the interview period was over, when I got a notice that I will be interviewed for harvard on the weekend.
Did any one of you, internationals, get an interview?
How was it? I've heard that harvard interviews are very formal and stressful.
What questions did they ask you?
What did you wear? I mean should I show up with formal clothing, or just something more casual and neat.
Any help will be much appreciated!

depends on which country you're from.
mine was a big shot in my country, so naturally there's this intimidatiing factor in place. i wore a smart casual clothing, not too formal.

Dont stress abt the interview-mine was similar to other ones I had,no big deal----no different tricky questions..nothing out of the blue...

Bottomline: Relax.I had my own interview 15 days before the EA result came out,so ure not too late

akash, i thought harvard didn't do interviews in india. at least it's not there in that little interview brochure that they sent.

akash, did you get in to harvard?

thanks for your input, guys. what kind of questions did they ask you - the usual "why harvard?", "what makes you special?", bla, bla, bla, or did you get something more unusual?

The guy I had my interview with did not ask me anything like "why harvard?". I found this particularly peculiar. There wasn't a question like "what makes you special?", but it was implied in our conversation. A typical question was the: "Which books have you read in the last 12 months and which have impressed you particularly and why?". My interview was more like a chat, nothing like make-it-or-break-it.

I was deferred.

I had the same experience as Bogororo-informal chat like conversation
The only "unusual" questions I was asked were

1)If u were to dine with some historical figure, who wud it be and why?

bogororo, when was your interview. I am asking this because I am from bulgaria (pretty close to you) and I find it strange that I was contacted so late?

And when did you get into Amherst? Did you apply ED?

My interview was about February 10th. I was contacted very quickly. I think they contacted people as they read applications or something like that. Don't worry, you're great if you were contacted! I know people here with amazing stats who haven't been contacted yet.
I got into Amherst yesterday evening. RD Early Write.

My interview went smooth, went in te direction i took it, it will be unfair to call it an interview, it was just a conversation with an uncle ...imagine waht you will be talking to a person 20 years later who wants to enroll in your highschool...someone seeking your advice...just an hour long chat with a stranger...the first question was when did i join my current highschool, and things went on from highschool to education, my hobbies, general discussions, spontaneous questions from what i said, or mentioned....the only question hat i was asked out of the way was about book reading, the one you like best, its impact on you...and so on....it went for over an hour....

relax, you can go and see www.yale.edu/asc and follow the link on interview reports/samples on the left panel ...at the bottom, Harvard intervie isnt much different
Good Luck!
know who you are, whaty motivates you and why, and you will be able to give any answer..when i went for the interview i was like...i dont have good chances anway, so interview cannot do me any worse...wit the tension off i had a nice conversation with the interviewer...
Goodluck!

thanks guys! i hope I won't blow it!

Bogororo, congrats on getting in Amherst. it's a GREAT school. i'm applying there too.
that's why i feel somewhat ashamed bc i haven't heard of the RD early write. i thought they announce decisions April 1.

hi mariela86. I am Bulgarian as well and I envy you so much - I haven't received an invitation for an interview. That's a great sign for you for sure. I am just curious how did they notify you of the interview - by email, phone or ordinary mail?

zdrasti, nasko. they notified me by email. Good luck with your other colleges!

Good luck with your interview!

interviews don't count for much... they are just another item on the checklist that admission comm's use... all you have to do is show you're not a complete dumbass.

I hope so...

It's a good thing H interviewer contacted you for an interview, mariela86. No need to worry too much. I just had my interview and it went pretty well. It's like half formal, my interviewer surely had some questions in his mind (there was the typical "why H") but it's pretty much like a conversation. Before the interview, you should think of some strong points of yours that you'd wanna stress during the interview. You gotta think of them in advance so that you can take initiatives during the interview, otherwise you'll depend much on the flow of the conversation and forget what you intially want to present. Talk about sth you're passionate about, and later near the end of the interview when it's more like a conversation than a question-n'-answer session, dig into the topic that you think your interviewer may have much to talk about (his job for example, or his favorite traveling experience, etc.) and listen attentively. That might help, too. I'm sure you'll have a pleasant experience. G'luck!

My clothes was not too formal (quite casual, I think, just a nice sweater and normal pants :) ). Eye contact and smiles are more important than clothes, so don't worry! I don't think interviews for int'ls are stressful, just be well prepared (think how you'd answer some common Qs like why H?, your fave EC?, your most proud achievement?...) and you'll be just fine! Best luck!
