Heel Pain - Plantar Fascitis, Achilles’ Tendon etc

Helpful input! Thanks so much.

Til this point I have not considered trip to a doctor. I did make a point to book appointment or my annual checkup, early Dec. Willing to consider a visit earlier (to PCP? Podiatrist? other?) if there is bothersome pain.

At this point it is just worrisome … a few times a day I’ll feel slight heel pain (which goes away if I lift my foot and/or move my leg). Heel pain location moves around but in general there has been improvement since the first sharp pain at bottom of heel on hard floor 12 days ago (and no pain when running that day)… have had various heel pains now and then later that first day, indoors barefoot. All new for me.

I’ve paused my running hobby but still do some biking and some gardening being careful about bending over too far. And a bit of stretching exercises (thankful for new tips!). I’ve never been one for uncomfortable high heels, but I have made efforts to wear more cushioned shoes and sneakers, including indoors too.

Interesting to read so many posts about PF-ish symptoms. Makes me wonder about the current trend toward more hard surface floors, less carpet.

Yep and have Pt do Grastin… Doesn’t tickle

Pcp won’t have a clue… Sorry I see this daily. Stop biking also as it pulls on the PF also especially if you are in cleats (cycling). Our bodies need rest. I wish everyone would do lower extremity yoga. Px 90 has a great video on this. Grab a friend’s DVD (do we still use dvds… Lol)

I am still recovering from a broken ankle and foot from 2 1/2 months ago. Definitely not doing PT exercises that would be like biking, just the opposite, flexing the foot up. I should add that after being in splints and a boot, my Achilles was very stiff.

It used to be I could not see specialist without referral from PCP. But now that I’m on a PPO (and have very high deductible), probably I could if needed someday consult a Podiatrist directly. Might need to do that when at the point of deciding if safe to start biking and running again.

Thanks for the advice on biking. My ride is quite easy (6 miles, flat, verry slow on a hybrid road/mtn bike… and LOL - I’ve never thought I had the coordination for clips). I’ve actually stopped biking this now too, with extra caution before we fly to a family wedding on Thursday.

I sometimes wear this foot sleeve over my bad heel. I bought at REI (also available on Amazon). It got good reviews from folks with PF. Not sure if I really have PF, but it seemed that as long as no discomfort wearing can’t hurt(?) and might help.

I’ve dealt with heel pain for a few years now and what’s helped me the best was getting socks with some arch support in them (from Walmart - not expensive), and Ryko sneakers from Super Shoes. Both are quite cheap - and priceless, for me.

What I need to find are school shoes. When I’m on my feet all day at school it’s awful (sigh), but gets better when I put the sneakers/socks on at home. I guess I should also find longer socks I can wear with school shoes (not heels - I never wear heels). I also wear slacks, not dresses, so socks aren’t out of place as long as they look decent in shoes.

Or… I could go ahead and retire from school. It gets really tempting sometimes.

I have no idea if these work. Of course I’m getting targeted ads. I do vouch for feetures socks being awesome running socks.

They look a lot like the low cut ones I got at Walmart that work so well, but the Walmart versions are much cheaper. Hanes makes them. They don’t claim to work for PF, they just mention extra arch support.

These look like it:

My daughter and I are Dansko, Birk fans. This is what she wears with slacks to her professional class. Beatrice Black Burnished Nubuck – Dansko

I love both of those brands (and own them). But they were off limits when my achilles was healing. The bit of work that your feet do in them, which promotes health and strength in healthy feet, was a strain for an ailing foot. I suppose it depends on how far gone you are, but after 6 weeks in a walking boot, this was too much. I think these are probably great for preventing problems though.

I love my Birks but couldn’t wear them after being in a boot. Podiatrist recommended a hard flat soled shoe initially. She also cautioned me about going barefoot - evidently not recommended.

I use a different version of these and their helpful for some.

Kuru is a real interesting brand. My patients actually told me about it and many really love this shoe. They have shoes for various pain symptoms

I love seeing all the shoe recommendations and links. (Once upon a time I had a high school job at Thom McAn shoe store.)

I’ve always liked comfortable shoes, but more so after I had a short term injury about 20 years ago (stood up on an asleep foot and rolled my it.). Don’t mind splurging if they’ll work out but always stressed about the small gamble. That’s how I ended up with a corral of SAS shoes (Whisper oxfords, Wink loafers, sandals). But most are now fairly worn, ought to replace with new. .

We just ordered a new color Stinson HOKA ATR for H (his favorite shoe for PF). And for me a new color of Saucony Women’s Peregrine 11 Trail Running Shoe and a Orthofeet Best Arch Support Shoe Insert for Women Plantar Fasciitis Heel Spurs Flat Feet Foot Pain. We walk hike 3-4 miles a day. These have worked for us…22 BMI would love less though

Such a coincidental post, since I am planning Saucony online info research today.

A few hours ago, after I wore my Saucony Omin 19 running shoes to a meeting for a dry run on use at airport, my husband asked if I should get inserts. I said I’ve thought about it, but would likely need to do when I get a new pair since I think would need to do half size upsize… true?

Based on my experience with inserts like Happy Feet, no. Order your regular size. But you may need to pull out the insert the manufacturer put in there.

Same size shoe for me. I pull out the insert and substitute the orthofeet one. I do wear thin or thick socks depending on the shoe fit. I also put the inserts in my Merrell Moab hiking shoes. They have made a real difference for me. The Asics I have does not have a removable insert, so I limit my time wearing it.

My PF tends to flare up when I’m standing still for a long time without proper support. Slipping on a pair of HOKA slides has made a big difference. I find they support my arch well and the heel feels a bit lower than the forefoot (remember Earth Shoes?) which stretches my heel just enough.

I have a pair of the pricey Feetures socks. But today I bought your Hanes Walmart recommendation (but opted for the pack with grey and black). I was in need of some low socks anyway, so it seemed worth a try. Thanks for your info!
