Hooks: none, really. Vaguely multilingual (three and a half, so not really). Have been told that I come across well in interviews? Anti-hook: Asian. Upper middle-class.

Mreh. After seeing so many of my Asian friends get rejected from good schools, I'm getting antsy, not that chance threads are a good way to alleviate that at ALL.

It’s a strong, strong application (2330 is nothing to sneeze at) and you’re the valedictorian, but the Ivies are reaches for anybody. Ditto Stanfurd.

Johns Hopkins, Chicago, and Cornell are probably very solid. As for hooks and anti-hooks, being upper-middle class at least means you don’t have to apply for financial aid (a process over which this decidedly middle-middle class guy frets incessantly). And at least you’re not white, which is the kiss of death for “diversity”. I think you’ll see a decent yield if you apply to all of these schools.

Chance back, ¿por favor? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1118399-chance-theatre-acting-inclined-junior-ill-chance-you-back.html#post12333784

I think your application is especially strong, considering the fact that you’re also a TASP finalist

I would say that your chances for JHU and Cornell are decent. You do seem to have the typical Asian application though, particularly with all of your math competitions and music activites, though it is good you have some leadership mixed in with your music.

You don’t seem to have something that particularly stands out, though. An outstanding essay would help.

Good luck and I wish you the best!

sigh See, this is when I wish I played something waayyy out there, like harp. Or French horn. Or maybe I should have done interpretive dance instead of violin. Oh well, too late to worry about that now–just hoping my arts supplement will be sufficiently impressive to make up for the epic Asian stereotype.

Incredibly strong app, great scores, etc. I’d say you have a great shot at all of those schools, unfortunately with the most competitive schools, you still have to factor in the uncertainty principal associated with the elite stature of them. That said, I can’t really find a weak aspect of your application.

Aren’t you asians tired of being overachievers? lol. You’re pretty solid, only thing that might hurt you is being asian. Due to the affirmative action backlash =/

…Wow. If you don’t get into at least one of those schools, I don’t know who will. Impressive!

Also, retake your SATs. If you were bright enough to get an 800 on critical reading, then I’m sure the 740 math was just a little screw up. Math is the easiest section to get an 800 on. The 790 in writing could have easily been an 800. Get that 2330 up to that 2400 where it should belong. If you can do that, I have no doubt that you’ll get into a few Ivys.

I disagree with Andyboy. Your time is better spent perfecting your essays, volunteering, and adding things to your list of achievements rather than trying to raise your SAT score by 70 points. There isn’t much of a difference between a 2330 and 2400 and a 2400, by all means, does NOT guarantee admission to an Ivy- Andyboy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Not all that score-oriented, to be honest. The 2330 was a first take (well, since seventh grade), so I might retake again. Either way, though, it’s not going to be the end of the world if I don’t have a 2400. I hope.

Swim18 -

All of his EC, is phenomenal. He’s val at probably a very good high school. Getting a 2400 would make him the perfect applicant. Not missing anything. He scored 790 on writing. I’m sure he doesn’t need much time to write a damn good essay. And out of the 8 Ivys he’ll apply to, I’m sure with everything he has, he’ll get into at least one.

In short: 2400 + #1 in class + meaningful ECs + good high school = acceptance to at least one Ivy. I didn’t specify just SAT score.

^ that is not guaranteed . i have seen someone like that get rejected from all ivies , and he had the most amazing ECs … haha well he got into harvard (legacy , expected) but if he wasn’t a legacy , perhaps he would have been rejected from harvard too . note me when i say this , he applied to only ivy leagues , that too all of them . so yeah , it’s not guaranteed . but maybe duke but who knows hehe . lol . haha , you can probably get into brown though … it’s like every 2400er goes there

youre stats are outstanding
I would be surprised if you didnt get into all of those places!
good luck!

Andyboy23, getting a 2400, #1 class rank, excellent EC’s, and a decent essay does NOT guarantee admission into ANY ivy. I go to a top-rated private school (~40-50 out of 130 students in each grade are national merit finalists each year), and a friend of mine was recently rejected from every ivy with a 2400, 99 GPA (anything over 95 in this school is incredible), 9 5’s on APs, and captain of two varsity sports teams. No matter what the stats are, admissions is always a crapshoot- you just increase your chances with those top scores.

And btw- Portia0105, don’t retake the SAT. While 2400 ostensibly looks better on an application, anything in the mid 2300’s will put you in contention at all of the schools. The top schools do know that the difference between a 2330 and a 2400 could be two or three questions (and that those two missed questions do not necessarily mean there is any difference in how smart you are). But, you know what, if you really want to retake for your own satisfaction, go ahead- it’s just not really worth the trouble from an admissions standpoint.

Bump…

To retake or not to retake? 2330’s a bit borderline.

(Also, I will reciprocate chancing, if you so desire.)
