Hey guys. Is anybody applying to the 2011 HELIOS scholars program at TGen? Also, does any past participant have any advice to give?? It would be much appreciated :)

It looks interesting but too bad I can’t apply.

I applied last year as a sophomore but was rejected. I made it to the final round though which was the farthest of anyone from my high school. My teacher said she had never had a sophomore get in. I am applying this year again. It seems really cool and I think the best local program.

Yes! definitely seems like the best. Congratulations on making it that far. I’m just worried about lack of prior experience…do you know if that is a big part of it?

I have no experience and have no idea how important this is. My guess would be not that big because this is meant for high schoolers and there are not many with prior experience.

what is this program?

'The Helios Scholars Program at TGen is a paid, eight-week biomedical summer internship open to Arizona high school, undergraduate, graduate and medical students. Interns develop foundational research skills through first-hand experience as they pursue careers in science or medical-related fields. '

I am applying!

I applied my sophomore year: rejected, junior year: got past the first round, then rejected…and now I’m hoping I finally make it for my senior year. :)

Does anyone know what kind of criteria they use? I mean…do they really expect us to have prior experience?

well I think I agree with ender, not all the applicants will have a background in research. I’m sure they take both inexperienced and experienced students… at least I hope so haha.
Do you have a specific area that you want to intern in?

Has anyone heard anything yet?

nothing here

Does anyone know how many people they take as finalists to be potentially interviewed?

Did you get past the first round? This girl I know got an email yesterday saying she got past the first round…I, however, did not get the email…even though I got past the first round last year when my credentials were less impressive…

I think the whole “rounds” thing is stupid though, because last year it gave me a false sense of hope. But no, I do not know how many people get past the first round and how many are interviewed.

Now I have no hope at all unless they send out that email in waves…which I doubt…

Are there any similar programs in the Phoenix area?

Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using CC App

I did get the email, but I’m looking for other programs now too. I’m worried I won’t even get an interview. The email said I passed the round to be eligibile for a possible interview haha. I couldn’t find anything else in the area though. Why don’t you apply for a camp at a university somewhere? I got started on those apps today as a backup plan, and some are pretty interesting

@ invisible monster
I am the exact same. I got the email last year but was rejected. Then I did not get it this year…

Two kids in my chem class got the email. One is a genius and one I am really surprised about. I think we had over 10 kids apply.

You should also remember we are being judged against college students so even if you get the email I think labs prefer college students over us. No surprise really.

I currently have a job, so if I do anything over the summer, it has to be paid. I can’t afford not to be getting paid unfortunately.

We had about 5 kids apply from my school. Only one got the e-mail. And I honestly have no idea why she was chosen over me…but whatever. I heard they got over 500 applications for 40 spaces…

Good luck scienceluvr! :)

Thanks invisible monster! Also, did you have an interview last year? Or did a researcher never contact you? Nobody has contacted me and it’s been a week… it’s got me a bit worried.

I was never contacted last year and both the applicants still in consideration have not received notices about interviews. Remember that not all the labs interview the applicants.

On a separate note I got my formal rejection letter today.

I was never contacted for an interview last year.

I know that there is a letter in my mail box right now from Tgen, so I assume that it’s the rejection letter lol. They sent them out later last year…weird.

Also, the girl from my school who received the e-mail has not been contacted yet about the interview either.

Ohh okay thanks guys! Would either of you mind just really quickly posting if you happen to hear that someone gets an interview? If you don’t really care that’s cool too haha it’s just that this whole “you may or may not get an interview” thing is driving me crazy. I’m wondering if they’ve even started interviewing yet…
