At least I never ran into any exceptions

Alot of schools don't require SAT IIs anyways

Okay, I'm going to assume that you still haven't applied, IndianKid, since you're trying to bump up this post the weekend after letters are in. Let me put this into perspective for you. These are my stats:

[ul][] SAT: 2220/2400 (700 Math, 750 CR, 770 Writing)
[] SAT IIs: 700 Math IIC, 760 Literature
[] GPA: ~3.3-3.4 UW, 3.6-3.7 W
[] Other stats: 5s and 4s on APs, Nat'l Forensics League member (Distinction), National Merit Scholarship
[] ECs: Speech and Debate, Government Team [one of my school's most selective groups on campus], Internship at the Federal District Courthouse last summer, Internship at the firm 'Stone & Busaillah, LLP' this summer, Interact
[] Awards: Numerous Speech and Debate awards, National Merit, 3rd at Int'l Optimist Oratorical Contest[/ul]

These are the schools I was rejected from:
[ul][]UC Berkeley
[] UCLA
[] UCSD
[] Pomona College
[] Claremont McKenna College
[] George Washington University
[li] Occidental College[/ul]
[/li]

I was waitlisted by:
[ul][li]Reed College [/ul]
[/li]

I was accepted by:
[ul][]UC Davis
[] UC Riverside [with Chancellor's Scolarship]
[] UC Santa Barbara
[] UC Irvine
[] Purdue University
[] Cal State Long Beach
[li] San Diego State University[/ul]
[/li]

I am waiting on:
[ul][li] University of Washington: Seattle[/ul]
[/li]

Considering that my GPA was higher, and I had 700+ SATs and SATIIs...well, you put the picture together yourself. Most of the schools on your list are top 20...that means you don't have a very good chance of getting into them. Take a look at the Cal States if you want to go to CA, or a lower UC. Most private schools are not going to take your GPA and test score combo, esp. since SATs are considered less important than GPA.

How did you get rejected from GWU? I knew 3.0s and 1250s who got in.

The UCSD average is like 3.9 [W]? and 1950ish.

HOW THE HELL DID THEY REJECT YOU?? are your EC's considered weak?

man what did you apply as? comp sci or engineering? or bio?

shiz I am so sorry man. 2200+ is a really really good score.

:[

you are better than that. go community college and transfer to someplace you belong in =/ like cornell.

I didn't even apply as a hardcore EE or Biochem or anything! I was a PoliSci major for EVERYTHING. ): I was banking on at least UCSD [I knew UCB and UCLA were reaches] and Oxy...but...I don't know what happened, but they all just decided they hated me. Hahaha, not really, but...Gah.

I don't want to go to a CC/transfer just because if I stay 4 years in a school, there's a lot of stuff that you get because you have a rep/you're respected. Like, I'm planning to run for student office, and join a crapload of clubs and stuff, and if I'm there for 4 years I'm more of a likely incumbent...am I making any sense? XD It's just like, when you spend more time at a school, you develop connections and it's easier to succeed in terms of ECs and the like. and your relationships with profs are better, because they've known you longer.

As for UCSD, I am 99.9% sure it was my GPA and it not being above 3.5 UW.

How did you get rejected from GWU? I knew 3.0s and 1250s who got in.
[/quote]
...Yeah, I was really dissapointed. ): But...Oh well, hopefully Reed eventually lets me in, because it was my 3rd choice after Pomona and CMC in terms of privates.

makemehappy:

what are you talking about?

I thought UCSD was hard, but relatively easy compared to UCLA and UCB.

their average is 3.9W which is lower than yours.

UC's are UC's. they look at weighted+ SAT scores. thats it.

you have a good weighted and REALLY GOOD SAT scores. this year the UCs were kinda random...maybe thats why.

1900+3.9 W+ decent EC's should not be hard for UCSD.

=/

thebrown:

Yeah, honestly? That's what I thought too. ): Which is why I was really kind of devastated to find out I'd been rejected. I've been wanting either SD or Cal since..freshman year, really.

My GPA is "~3.3-3.4 UW, 3.6-3.7 W" which is lower than the 3.9 W. Bah...I wish I'd done better in my classes ):

And that's what I thought too!! I thought at least my SAT scores would KIND OF balance it out, but...apparently if my results are anything to go by, they don't care about SATs that much anymore.

My stats are actually 1900+, 3.5 W+, which is why I think that it was my GPA that brought me down. My ECs also could have been better, since I kind of didn't have that many service hours [unless interning/working counts] But hey, I'll hopefully be applying to UCD's honors program, and if I get in, then at least I'll be getting a good edu there. (:

yeah, a good education from Davis, and I heard by 2008 it will be much much better...its really closing the gap between UCSD putting it at number 4.

but from what I've heard, you won't have much of a social life. [I'VE HEARD]

and its in a rural area...with a certain "cow" draft on windy days.

So I don't know...should have applied to Cal Poly or something, at least they have better stuff to offer.

I'm probably half-educated about the Davis experience...but I would pick UCSB over it.

good luck :]

Okay so are my chances completely gone? Becuase I know people without URM's and Legacy's who go in with lower scores but had really good essays.

gone for top 3 UC's. [UCLA UCB UCSD] because you are out of state.

URM's and Legacy don't count or count very little at UC's.

for others, well, it's entirely subjective. But it will be hard.

hard for you

hard for me.

Now I have a slew of questions that I could use some advice on.

For taking SATII's can I take more than 1 on a test date? Two future test dates are June 2 and October 14. I know I won't be ready for the one in October, I would rather have the summer left to study for my SATII's and take them on October 14. However, that is to late to use to apply to schools like University of Michigan and Chicago because they have rolling admissions, and the earlier the better, right? How long would it take for me to get my scores back and have them ready to be submitted. And as for applying early which schools do I NEED to apply early to for better chances, and which ones don't care about time?

University of CaliforniaBerkeley Super Reach?
Carnegie Mellon University Reach w/ ED?
University of CaliforniaLos Angeles Super Reach?
University of MichiganAnn Arbor EA Reach?
University of Southern California Reach or Super Reach?
University of CaliforniaSan Diego Super Reach?
New York University EA Reach?
University of IllinoisUrbana-Champaign Match/Low Reach Instate
University of Chicago Super Reach? EA? Instate
Loyola University Safety? Instate
University of Illinois-Chicago Safety? Instate

What times should apply to these U's at? And if I do get my SATII's done in time I would probably HAVE to send them to all my choices right? And if I do goodon them it is my advantage to send them to all my choices, right?

ok. University of Michigan and Chicago have rolling admissions like you said. Now, have you taken the SAT before? have you taken practice tests/ courses? what is your score on diagnostics? what are you aiming for? Uchicago etc need SOLID scores. 2000 at a minimum. aim for 2000. you haven't taken SAT I yet, I suggest taking them in June and October and November. June one will count for Chicago and Michigan [rolling admissions, like you said, earlier the better, assume October 1st for those]. NYU does not offer EA, only ED. Carnegie Mellon is a slight reach with Early Desicion, 2000+ SAT scores, depending on your major. If you want to do Engineering or Comp Sci or Science, prepare to work harder.

Assuming you get a 2100 SAT

Loyola, UIUC, UIC are all safeties/ safe matches/ matches.

UCSD is a SLIGHT reach, out of state. ditto Michigan, NYU and Carnegie.

USC, UCLA, UCB, USC are all reaches. [out of state, lower GPA]

SAT II's:

you can take many in one sitting

take them all in June and retake them in October.

June is your time for SAT I and SAT II for Chicago and Michigan. you need good scores. practice your ass off. If you got a 30 on ACT [did you? i think you did] then you will have to hone your skills, because you are quite close.

good luck! [Carnegie and NYU early fo sho]

erm, a couple things wrong.

thebrown, you are way overestimating his chances. if CMU was a slight reach for me (34ACT, 3.6-3.7ish UW GPA, female in engineering, etc.) it is not a slight reach for him.

and also chicago does not have rolling. it has early action. you don't need to get it in until whenever the deadline is.

and also october is not very early for u of michigan. you need to get it in in september, considering your low GPA.

you can only do one of CMU or NYU early decision. if you apply somewhere early decision and you are accepted you are legally bound to attend. so you only do that to one of those 2 schools if it's your top choice, and you can't do one ED and the other ED. doesn't work.

chocolate luvr: You are right, but so am I. yes, I probably am overestimating his chances, but you know...if he wants to do dance or something he'll get in, lol.

yeah I didn't mention only ONE early. You can do ED NYU and EA UCHICAGO though. [i think]

also, I though Umich only opened up in october? [for rolling]

=/

yeah, sometimes dancing helps.

correct that you can do ED NYU and EA Chicago

You can apply to UMich earlier than October...this year there were some who applied in September and heard back in mid October.

You might want to check out the Brown message board if you're considering applying there. (I'm going there this fall, so it's the only school I can really comment on.) A lot of people have posted their stats and whether they got in or not, and judging from that, it would be a major reach for you to get in. It's your GPA that's the problem; your ACT score is pretty high, and your extracurriculars are really exceptional. Who knows? It wouldn't be impossible for you to get in, but that GPA is definitely a problem.

ACT instead of SAT scores shouldn't be a problem. Most colleges accept ACT scores in lieu of SATs, although you might still have to take the SAT II subject tests, depending on the school.

IndianKid,

You may take 3 SAT IIs on one exam date. I'd recommend two at the most. Better not to get fatigued and do poorly.

If schools don't really require SAT's do I really need to take them? Is it okay if I just stick to my ACT? Unless I am better at the SAT's than the ACT? I probably will take SAT 2's in June first and than in October, but that would be to late for UoM? And as for Chicago I just want to do EA and turn my stuff in before their early action deadline right? As for other schools on my list does it matter if I apply early or do I just have to apply before the deadlines?

IndianKid, you must take 2 SATII's for UCs to even look at your application. There is no exception for UCs. If you don't take it admission chances for you at any UC even Riverside and Merced will be ZERO. UCs require 2 SATII's from 2 different subject areas: history/social science, English literature, math (Only 2C math is accepted), lab science or foriegn languages.

I definitely know this for sure. Applied, Accepted and Matriculating at Cal for Class of 2010.

Good Luck IndianKid and pull up those ACT scores! UCs don't require SATI's if you have ACTs as I did that.

ok ok, Golden Bear is completley right.

I recieved 1600/2400 on my SAT's, but a 30ish on the ACT.

BIG difference. I suggest taking practice tests, if you get UNDER 1900 on SAT, don't take it until you are SURE you can attain MINIMUM 2000.

you don't need SAT for any school. you have a 30, work on that, raise it to 33 before october. [I believe there is a september one]

I never knew Umich took apps so early, so you need to finalize matters by june. Take two SAT II's.

Riverside and Merced MIGHT be good schools, but still, reconsider. UCSC is known for a big drug problem. [I live close by] UCSB, in my opinion, would be your best shot. [followed by UCI, UCD, and UCSD]

still apply to UCLA and UCB, but don't hold your breath.

get a 10-11 GPA of 4.0 W + 31 ACT + GOOD EC's, you would be in good shape for UCSD, and UCLA being a attainable reach.
