Hello, I have a question about GPA/ranking!

Hello!

I am a Korean-Canadian (Canadian citizenship) attending an international school in South Korea.

My school, since it's an international school, is very competitive and small in size. My class only has 80 students- (somewhere around.)

My GPA will be little different because I have spent my grade 9 year in Canada, and this current school says they will not put my grade 9 GPA in calculation for overall GPA (so basically just 4 semester GPA's, grade 10 and 11) and send my grade 9 transcript separately.

Anyway,

my 4 semester GPA will be not so bad, I think it will be somewhere around 3.7. (grade 10 = 3.5 (had hard time adjusting to the new school) / 3.75 grade 11 = ~3.625 / ~4.0....therefore, 3.69~3.75)

However, since I was not here since grade 9 and people are very competitive, (in addition to its small class size,) I do not think I will be very high when it comes to ranking. My school doesn't rank its students; however, it does sort students out in estimated decile.

I really want to get into JHU to study International Relations ...

will my situation act very negatively upon my application? (considering that my SAT, SATII, AP and E/C are decent.)

Oh and one more question.. I am sorry to bother you all, but I have skipped Chinese I and III. So, I took Chinese II in grade 10 and now taking AP Chinese in grade 11 (got A in grade 10, getting an A this year as well! woohoo :P) In grade 9, back in Canada, I took French 9 (which I also got an A.) Anyway, this only fills 3 years of foreign language... should I take Spanish I next year in my senior year? Or does skipping whole level of foreign language look much better than studying a language for four years?

ah.. why is my school so small! :P

Thank you!

oh and one last question..

do I need to take TOEFL?

I was born in Korea, lived there till grade 3 (elementary) then went to Canada.

I lived in Canada for 6 years (until grade 9) and also obtained Canadian citizenship.

Will my TOEFL score be required?

I am so sorry but I do not know where in the world that search button is; I would most likely to find the answers out by myself without bothering you all but I just can't find it :P

Thanks!

First, most of you questions could have been answered on the JHU web site, especially with our International Student FAQ page:
http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/international.html

As far as your GPA and rank questions, I do not comment on how a student's individual school circumstance will be evaluated and how they will affect one's chances for admission. This is the role of the admissions counselor reading your application, and every situation will be looked at as an individual situation.

Read my answer on the following thread for remarks about course selection:

The TOEFL is required of applicants whose native language is not English and who attend a non-English-speaking high school. If you attend an English-language school but do not speak English at home, you should take the TOEFL. If your native language is not English and you attend high school in the U.S., you must take the TOEFL if you have been here for fewer than five years.
