Hello, I need some advise.

Hello, glad I found this site. I've been worried about my grades and am trying to figure out what to do about school and just needed some help or other peoples thoughts. First let me apologize, even though I've been in college for 3.5 years I still don't know that much about how things work so if I'm asking stupid noob questions just bear with me please. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advise.

Currently I'm going to The University of Texas at Arlington and am in the engineering program there, but it would probably be easier to understand if I start at the beginning.

I started college in the fall of 2006 and went to Cisco Junior College. I ended up taking 9 classes there but got D's in my Botany, Govt. of US, Zoology, and Public Speaking classes. This was mainly because I slacked off in high school and assumed I could do it in college and still get by, and I was also working about 50 hours a week on top of school. So out of all my credits only 15 hours transferred.

The next year (fall 2007) I transferred to Weatherford College because all of my friends were going there and I wanted to move away from home. Yet again I got sucked into having a social life over school and another four classes didn't transfer. American Literature, Calculus, History of US, and Intro to C++. After my second semester there the school put me on academic suspension but I had it repealed and did better the second year I was there. But still my cumulative GPA was low, somewhere between 2.1 and 2.5 though I'm not exactly sure what it was.

Now this semester (fall 2009) I transferred to Arlington and am put on a probation type thing for the engineering program. So I have to make a 2.5. The problem this year is that they put me in a Macro Economics class that I didn't need for my major and it's killing me. That and the Pre Calc class they put me in, though that one is totally my fault because I kept forgetting about the assignments. They only scheduled me for 13 hours and I have to have at least 12 so that my student loans don't want to start collecting. I can't drop any classes basically and I'm screwed. I think my gpa started fresh when I came here because on my unofficial transcript it says 0.0. I'm not sure I'll be able to make a 2.5 though my other three classes (government, world lit, and intro to electrical engineering) I'm making high B's and A's. I'm not sure whats going to happen if I don't make a 2.5 if I just can't be in the engineering school till I bring it up (which was my understanding) or if I basically get put on academic suspension all together.

Anyway I'm trying to figure out a way that I can get back on track and the thing I've found most helpful to me is isolationism. Whenever I'm where my friends are I tend to do worse. What I was wondering is if ya'll thought it would better benefit me to go back to Cisco and re-take all of the classes that I haven't passed in the past. (I heard somewhere that if you make a low grade in a class then re-take it then the higher grade replaces the low grade on your transcript. Is this true?) If I go back it'll be cheaper and I can get more of my math classes out of the way too, as well as some others that are required. Thats my problem with my credits too is that of the 53 hours that transferred to UTA only 4 of the hours are actually required for my major. All the councilors from my previous schools had told me to take all of these core classes for engineering and here I am now and none of the classes they told me to take help me at all. I'm basically starting from scratch. Any thoughts?
