Hello --- I'm New!

Hi, I'm Michael. I just found this site after spending hours online worrying about my admission status to USC... My friend just got a packet/acceptance letter yesterday in the mail and I started to freak out. I have been a wreck for the past 24 hours! I suppose I could ask you what my chances of getting into USC are:

3.6 UW GPA
4.3 W GPA
10 Honors Classes (Does this matter?)
7 AP Classes
About 50% A's 50% B's, No C's or worse
1950 SAT I (Math: 700, Reading: 630, Writing: 620)
SAT II (Math II: 620, Chemistry: 630)
80 Hours of community service
4 Offices in ASB (1 per year)
National Honor Society
California Scholarship Federation
Several Other School Clubs/Awards
1 Year of Football (Scholar Athlete Award)
1 Year of Cross Country(Scholar Athlete Award)
4 Years of Lacrosse(Scholar Athlete Award x 4)
Eligible in the Local Context (UC top 4% of class program)
4 Classes taken over summer at a local Community College, all A's in all courses. (Intro to Film, History of Film, Intro to Business, Intro to Marketing)
I also have an older brother that is a Junior at USC (If that helps my chances of getting in.)
I also would say that my essay was pretty effective in showing my passion for Business/Cinema-Television. If I do get into the Marshall School of Business I plan on entering the BCA program they have.

So what are my odds? I've checked the Freshman profile over and over, and I think I'm pretty close to the middle 50%, even though my GPA is low. Any thoughts? Thank you for your time!

where is your friend from and what were his stats???

Michael-

I am applying for entrance into the BCA program as well, and my statistics are kind of like yours. I think you have a solid shot at getting into the program, but that's just my best guess. Have you received the application for the BCA program yet? I've been waiting for them to e-mail it to me because they said they would send it at the end of January.

Taxi1113, everyone that I talked to on campus said that you must be admitted into Marshall then apply around May of this year. I think that's what I was told... Hmmm. And my friend had a 32 on the ACT. She's taking 6 AP's this year with straight A's I believe. That's all I know, she's pretty much a genius. I'm so jealous of her. :(

Michael, USC sends out their acceptances in waves, most being in March. It is understandable that you feel anxious now since your friend received hers in the very first wave, but try not to worry too much. Just hang in there and be positive. Your stats are in the middle 50%, you are top 4% in your class, have followed a rigorous course load, good ECs etc.
Best of luck!

Michael, When USC did an information in Chicago I spoke to Brittany Valdez (Assistant Director of Undergrad Business). She told me that the BCA program must be applied to before you receive your decision to the school. Since the program is fairly new, I think they might be doing something different with it this year. I emailed her shortly after the information session and asked when the application would be available. She emailed me back and told me that it should be available in late January or early February. I recently emailed her again and asked when the applications would be up, and she said that she would email the application to me at the end of this month, so I'm expecting it fairly soon. As far as the amount of people that get accepted into the program, she told me that they accepted everyone who was admitted into the school last year. She said that after all was said and done, they only had about 55 people interested in the program who had been accepted, and that she was supposed to accept only 50, but she accepted them all. I imagine that this year they will see many more applications for the BCA program. The problem is that many incoming freshmen don't know that you must apply sometime in the next month or so. I'm surprised how subtle they are about this concentration. I think if they publicized it more, many more people would apply for it. Here's what she told me in her e-mail.

"To be considered for admission to this program, students must:
-Apply to USC as an incoming freshman
-Apply to USC as a "Business Administration Major"
-Submit a supplemental BCA application to the Marshall School of
Business Undergraduate Admission Office by April 1, 2009. (Applications
will be available in January. You may obtain an electronic application
from me directly). I will also send out an electronic application link
to those who have inquired."

As soon as the BCA application is up on the USC site, I'll let you know.

Also, my statistics are somewhat similar to your friend. I got a 31 on my ACT and am currently enrolled in 5 AP's and have taken 3 others. I'm sending my first semester grades because I got all A's and a B. Hopefully that will work in my favor.

Thank you so much for that information! I will try to get in touch with the Business school so I can get my hands on the application! I hope we both get in, that we be so exciting! I just got A's and B's on my 1st Semester progress report, but I don't really want to send it in since it was mostly B's... Are you from California?

Also, it's a relief to hear that they accepted everyone that applied into the BCA program last year. I remember hearing that they only accepted about 40 - 50 incoming freshmen into the program and was worried that many more applied than just 40... Now all I need is to get in and apply and I'm on my way!

Thanks again for this information!

Best of luck to you too!

No problem. Let me know if you find out any new information. I'm actually from Chicago.

Also, I'm willing to bet that they're going to have far more than 40 people apply for the BCA program this year. There were a couple of people inquiring about it at the Chicago information session alone. However, I'm optimistic and don't think it will be really cut throat or anything. As you said, hopefully we'll all get into the program.

I just emailed USC asking about how I would get ahold of the application, I'll let you know how it goes!

has anyone seen/gotten the BCA application for 2009-10??
She e-mailed me saying it would be available soon, but I'm nto really sure what that means.

Oh so for this year everyone seeking to enter the BCA program has to apply directly to Marshall initially, and get accepted, before making an additional application to enter the BCA? I couldn't possibly have applied to it before receiving my decision as I was admitted on 1/28

Michael, I think you have a more than decent chance, although you SATs could be higher.

The application is up, for all those interested.

I called Marshall a while back and they said that you apply AFTER you are admitted, where is the application, me722?

I think you have to request for it? Like contact them or something

YEA, EMAIL them about it, but you have to be admitted first.

I dunno much about the BCA program, but I think you have pretty good chances at getting accepted…I had lower SAT scores but higher GPA and I was surprised they accepted me lol…but then again, I applied for architecture, which I’m assuming is less competitive than Marshall…hope that helped lol :)
