HELP! 31 ACT, Strong GPA, Where do I Apply!?

APs taken: Lang (grade: A-, AP Score: 5), Comparative Gov. and Politics (grade: A+, didn’t take AP test)

I will have taken all English APs and 1/3 of History APs my school offers, if you can’t tell already I’m into the humanities.
All other classes were honors, straight A/A+ (except one C sophomore year in honors Algebra 2, yikes)

Extracurriculars:
avid member of my school’s dance company, holding leadership position senior year
Student Government: 11th grade- Junior Class Representative, 12th grade- Senior Class President
Minimum wage job (March 2018-August 2018)
Literacy Club - volunteering to read to young kids (once a week)

Possible Majors:
Sociology
Linguistics
Psychology

Looking for realistic match/safety schools, and a few worth applying to reach schools, no smaller than 2,300 students, but size doesn’t really matter
Preferable location: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest

I’d love to hear any ideas you have!

Based on selectivity alone, you will find lots of matches and realistic reaches (as well as some likely schools) in the ~40 to ~100 range in an analysis such as this: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-610-smartest-colleges-in-america-2015-9. For colleges of particular interest, I’d recommend you consider schools outside of this range as well. With respect to colleges with programs that generally match your academic interests, you might look into Vassar or Smith.

What are your financial constraints?

I’d say go for the gusto. You’ve obviously been a great student; your ACT score and UW GPA are indicative of that. Ivy Leagues and Top 20 schools will be difficult, but are still very possible.

I disagree with @derivativeslover. “The gusto” is to be found at a well-matched school where most students have done similarly well in high school at a similar level of rigor. Focusing on “lottery” schools that are not well-matched in this way can cause you to miss out on the best opportunities for you. You are well-qualified for some excellent schools. They do not fall into the “Ivy League” or “Top 20” category. You sound inclined to be realistic, and you will have wonderful choices within a realistic range - don’t be distracted by others on CC with a less clear-eyed mindset.

@rosered55 is correct that we need a general idea of your budget and financial aid eligibility in order to make good suggestions. Also your gender, as some of the women’s colleges would be great targets if you’re female.

(Minor point: how is your UW GPA 4.0 if you got a C in AlgII? Did you do grade recovery?)

Yes – a near sure way for the OP to miss out on great match schools would be through the disproportionate pursuit of high reach, or out-of-reach, schools.
