Help a Bro Trim a Massive College List?

Hey everyone,

I've narrowed down my list of schools to roughly 19, which is a little too many; I'd definitely like to get it under 15 at the very least.

Stanford
Dartmouth
Yale
Brown
UPenn
Columbia
Princeton
Harvard
Rice
Vanderbilt
Emory
WashU
Northwestern
Duke
USC
UMaryland
UPittsburgh
UMiami

Financial aid matters to me, which is why there are a couple financial safeties (Umaryland, Umiami, etc) on this list. My stats place me into competitive reach of the Ivies, although I'm not even close to a "sure-in". As of right now, I'm not really sure what I'd like to do. I'm probably going to major in philosophy and economics or political science, and long term go into business or law.

Thoughts? Any of these schools stick out like a sore thumb? Too many reaches?

Help meee! :)

take out princeton, columbia, emory, MIAMI, maryland, USC

lol, you forgot JHU and Cornell.

[You clearly did not do any thorough research before putting those schools on your tentative college list - though you’ve certainly done a good job “researching” what schools are prestigious.

Penn and Dartmouth? Really?]

Penn and Dartmouth appeal to me for different reasons. Both are well-reputed in the business world; Dartmouth, however, has an intimate undergraduate experience which I would really appreciate. On the other hand, however, Penn has a number of unique combined business-technology programs (Fisher, the Life Sciences) that appeal to me as well.

See where I’m running into problems? :frowning: Everything sounds so appealing!

Add CMC, they have the PPE program. Philosophy Political Science Economics!
Don’t know much about UMIAMI, but I doubt any private can be a financial safety for anyone unless there is a specific program/scholarship which you automatically qualify for because of stats.

Also if your concern for financial aid is based on merit, or need?

I didn’t eliminate any schools for you above but, I’d drop 4 out of the following 5.
Vanderbilt
Duke
Wash U
Emory
Northwestern

Penn also has a PPE program (Philosophy, Politics & Economics). Great major

I’m going to trust your judgement that all but the following schools are realistic based on your stats:

Stanford
Dartmouth
Yale
Brown
UPenn
Columbia
Princeton
Harvard

You have 8 reaches. If you got into all of them, which would you immediately eliminate? Which would be your top 3-4 of these 8?

Now, I’m going to assume that while the following schools are highly selective you have a reasonable chance at them:
Rice
Vanderbilt
Emory
WashU
Northwestern
Duke

There are 6. Pick a top 4.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. More thoughts? :)

Yes. Try giving us more information if you expect to get useful responses.

Otherwise you’ll just have people dropping schools they don’t like or for seemingly no reason (liek0806, Skittled).

Obviously someone can find good qualities in any school. You need to figure out exactly what it is you’re looking for in a college and then see how your list matches up.

Your college choices are all over the coast, be reasonable- all of these schools are good on financial aid. you would be suprised at the difference in packages schools will give you and it won;t always come from the ones your expecting it to come from. that said use your location, pref in size of school, etc. to eliminate

Please don’t fall in love with a bunch of reach schools. Despite what many starry-eyed CC’ers think, the world will not end if you don’t get in to an Ivy League. Focus on broadening your safeties and truly loving them.

With that said and an assumption that your major is PPE, apply to Denison.

Leave:

Brown
Columbia
Princeton
Vanderbilt
WashU
Northwestern
UMaryland
UPittsburgh
UMiami

^
Another example of what I predicted earlier.

Otherwise you’ll just have people dropping schools they don’t like or for seemingly no reason.

Why are UMaryland and UMiami your financial safeties? How much merit $$ have they indicated that they’d give you?

When you say that you need financial aid, has your family determined its EFC?

Are you certain that your family wouldn’t have a high EFC?

Can your parents meet their EFC? If not, how will that gap be met?

If you have no idea what your family’s EFC is, do you know approx how much your parents earn?

FYI-

Son is attending his safety MIAMI and got full tuition and many, many perks. He is a Foote Fellow and can take special seminars, has been on trips, given tickets to events, etc… Also, he has no requirements other than that of his major. As a Singer Scholar he gets full tuition.

Son was valedictorian of his HS, 4.0 unweighted GPA and had 13 Ap’s and 1 college class.

In the end, with no financial requirements from us, as we told him we’d pay for undergrad, he chose Miami. The school has been great. Classes and advising are great. Most of his classes have about 20 kids. Largest has been 61 (they let him in after it was closed). He is in clubs and is always busy doing something. We are thrilled with Miami and we/son is happy that we will have the money to pay for grad school for him.

Do not rule out Miami even if you get in elsewhere. In the end look at the big picture, ie, school, academics, cost, and if you are planning to attend grad school and need the $$ for that.

I second the thoughts on Miami! Daughter got hefty merit scholarship $16,000.00 per year and lots of financial aid for total package of about $40,000.00. Miami was the least expensive choice she had, including in state.

And what a choice!!! Wow! This school far exceeds my wildest dreams. They are so attentive to the students, small classes (taught by Profs not T.A.s), your Professors get to know you and there is constant interaction and accessability, tons of FREE activites (football games, concerts, plays, movies, parties, fireworks), free laundry with an internet set-up where it tells you when machines are available, opportunities to work in labs and do research as undergrads, and the list goes on and on!

My daughter has a guaranteed transfer to Cornell for next year. The paperwork is due soon and when I asked if she wanted to transfer she said “No way am I leaving Miami! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!”

Forgot to add:

Miami is very generous with AP credit and gave my D 38 credits so she is technically a Sophomore. She is triple majoring in Marine Science/Biology/Chemistry and will be able to do this in the normal 4 years!

i spent a week at University of Maryland it was awful

and WashU waitlists everybody, personally i don’t want to go through with that so theyre off my list
