Help a fellow Indian?

Hi everyone,

I am kind of new to this forum, but I have been reading the CC posts for about 2 years.

I am Indian (lived in bangelore, but moved to States when i was 10) and I would like to get chanced by other indians!

I did post this in the chance section, but barely anyone answered. It would be awesome to get some help from other indians.

I want to get into a bs / md med program (like a lot of others), and I would love it if I could get into SLU med scholars or even brown plme. Can you guys chance me?

I know I am a sophomore and nothing is concrete in terms of tests, but I think they are reasonable expectations for me.

Thanks guys

Here are my stats:

School:

Currently a sophomore in high school.
unweighted GPA: 4.0 Weighted: 4.07 (hopefully with good grades next year, this will move above a 4.4)
Rank: 1 of 600
In a lot of honors courses and 2 AP courses this year.
I have completed IB MYP (which doesn't really help)
I am enrolled in the IB diploma program and here are my courses for next year:
-IB English HL
-IB Math Sl
-IB Psychology SL
-IB Physics HL
-IB Biology HL
-IB Chemistry HL
-IB Spanish SL
-IB Theory of Knowledge (which everyone takes)
-and I am also enrolled in one AP as well

School ECs:
-Participate in Policy Debate, have won a couple tournaments
-Chemistry Club
-Model UN
-Amnesty International
-Volunteers in Action
-Other various clubs

Test Scores:
-Hope to get 4s or 5s on all my AP tests
-PLAN score of 28 without studying, so hopefully a 34 or 35 on the real ACT.
-currently planning on getting 2200 + on my SAT
-SAT IIs are still pending, but I will take Math, Bio, and Chem for sure (IB classes should help me prepare for these fairly well)

Volunteering/ECs outside of school:
-Volunteer at 3 hospitals: plan to reach 900 hours by the end of senior year at the rate i'm going (activities included general patient care: cleaning up, talking to, etc. , some office work, actual onsite helping nurses, working in the E.R. helping doctors out, etc.)
-Volunteer at the VA, plan on reaching about 200 hours here at the rate I am going
-Volunteered about 150 hours at a village hospital in India helping out the poor.
-Co - created a medical abstract with some medical students and researchers
-Internship with radiologist in Chicago
-Volunteered at a large indian hospital (in India) for about 50 hours.
-Have done research in a lab as well
-Taken college courses relating to medicine and science outside of school
-Went to South Africa and spent the whole summer volunteering to help AIDS patients as well as researching with doctors stationed there. (did some shadowing as well). The volunteering was almost everyday for about 5 - 7 hours for about 2 months, so almost 375 hours of volunteering there
-Volunteered at a local center where I actually got to work with disabled children (this was about 40 hours, and I plan to go back for about another 40 hours)
-Have shadowed multiple doctors in the town.
-Also had an active role in campaigning for and actually collecting donations for Cancer research. (almost like a door - door request system).
-Also, with the VA, I also went around trying to collect donations for veterans as well.
-Lastly, other random volunteering experiences as well, such as library, which I would consider at least 100- 150 hours.

Thats about it. Thanks for any answers. Any comments/criticisms are welcomed, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me any other things I could do as well.

(btw, I am not becoming a doctor for the prospects of money. Truly, I don't care how much I get paid as long as I make a difference in other's lives. I only want to get into a bs/md program so that i can concentrate more on studies and college rather than having to worry about the MCAT and medical school applications. Also, part of the South Africa trip was paid for by the stipends I earned with research and I will be paying off the rest of the money with the earnings I make in residency. Hope this helps!)

That is one impressive transcript you’ve got going on there! I was interested to read your note at the bottom, about making a difference…Good to hear something like that, thumbs up for you. I think that wealth of knowledge and all that experience across the globe is something different colleges are looking for. And of course your #1 class ranking will definitely stand out, especially in a fairly large class you are in…I think you are in the running for your mentioned programs, and you still have time ahead of you to accomplish much more

Good luck to you in the future!

Thanks jerseydude for the encouragement. I hope I do have a good chance to some good programs like Brown plme!

TheChance, your resume looks impressive. Good luck!

Thanks Maxxwell

You’re great, but chances just don’t work <_<
Have faith in yourself.

“PLAN score of 28 without studying, so hopefully a 34 or 35 on the real ACT.
-currently planning on getting 2200 + on my SAT”

You cannot “plan” standardized test scores.

Thechance keep up the good work, study hard and enjoy your high experience and good luck :)

@gary7 - Thanks for the encouragement
@smit52992 - Those are just what I am expecting based on previous performance
@funnypunjabi - Thanks

Bring
Up
My
Post

What do you want now? :open_mouth: Chances don’t deserve replies in any case :stuck_out_tongue:
Trust your own abilities man!

Looks impressive. I have friends who were PLMEs, they are very outstanding individuals that are completely unimposing - a great lot! My one suggestion would be to shy away from counting all your hours on your application. Getting 100-150 hours, for example, can be done can be done in 1-2 months and colleges like to see long term commitment to a cause (3-4 years), not just doing things to make your resume pages long. Quoting hours gives the impression that you are like Clooney with flyer miles in “Un in the Air” - just racking them in. I would only bring up your hours where it is really a number worth mentioning, like the 900 hours at the hospitals. Plus, you have 5 clubs and “Other various clubs” and all your volunteering. If I were an admissions officer I would be skeptical - so just begin honing your interests. You’ve got time!
