Help a girl find an engineering college???

My D is a FYE student at Purdue planning on majoring in Chem E. She also applied at CWRU, Northwestern, WashU and a couple of safeties. We visited several others such as Vanderbuilt (no co-op), CMU and Pittsburgh (if you visit one you might as well visit the other. Pittsburgh has a very different feel for a college campus), Rose Hullman and University of Cincinnati.

Rose Hullman was closed when we were there but we got a tour by an alumni. Pretty little campus. quite isolated it seemed. Everyone who I have spoken with who has attended RH has been very complementary about the education they received. To me CWRU is similar in feel to CMU. They both started as two separate colleges (a technical college and a liberal arts university) that combined in the 1960’s. Case is known for giving good financial aid (including merit aid not just need based) CMU is not. Case is about 50% graduate students. It’s in a very nice area within a not so nice area of Cleveland. Cleveland unlike GA is quite snowy, windy and cold in the winter. Northwestern was gorgeous and was perhaps the only school D would have considered other than Purdue. Alas she was not accepted. If she had to do it over she would not have applied to WashU. Great University but as she considered it, it did not provide the type of co-op experience she was looking for. Purdue U. was the university she most liked. We were out of state and concerned about cost. For us Purdue gave her the scholarships she needed to attend. A little over half a semester in to her first year she likes it. If you want a different feel to a campus look into U of Pittsburgh. Good luck on your search.

It really depends on your credential and affordability besides the preference for size of the school and geographic setting. Purdue, UIUC, Wisconsin, UMich, NU, and UMN are schools with great ChemE in the mid-west. Some are more affordable than others.

I just want to write a quick note to everyone that offered me advice. You gave me a LOT to think about and I’m looking into all the schools you suggested.

Someone mentioned Gatech- I applied EA there and obviously its my #1 choice, but its really competitive and I don’t know if I’ll get accepted. In fact, its my recurring nightmare that I will get rejected, lol!

So, UGA is also pretty competitive and I applied EA there too- again no guarantees on my being accepted & they don’t really have biomedical engineering (I looked at the ABET website & biological is listed under agricultural so I’m kinda confused about that, but on the plus side they do have biochemical engineering)

And I think I’d be pretty happy going to RH- but again, no guarantees on admission. I checked out a website that listed some places to eat there, an Indian restaurant and a place that serves baba ganoush- which I love  so I think with a few places there and veganessentials.com I could survive happily. I’ve been taking my lunch to school now for years so not eating cafeteria food isn’t really that big a loss- I think the real loss is not having leftovers. And a friend with similar interests might apply there too. We’re both wondering what happens if gatech rejects us and how much our parents can afford???

Anyway, I’m checking out the colleges you guys suggested and also rethinking applying to UCSD and CMU because I’ve read alot that says they don’t give scholarships. If I have to go OOS, I’m thinking maybe I should apply to private? Would they cost less with scholarships than public OOS? Its soooo confusing…

And I’ll send in my app to WPI this weekend- I’ve had too much school stuff this week so I haven’t gotten around to that.

I still wish RPI didn’t have such a strict computer requirement, cuz that looked like a really good school. I thought about emailing their admissions to see if they would accept substitutions- but if they allowed that I’m thinking they’d have that posted somewhere.

I forgot to mention CWRU- I applied EA there too- again no guarantees that they will accept me. And I’m kinda worried, cuz all the other schools sent emails saying they had received my app and to access their site to check my status, but I haven’t received that from them. Does anybody know if this is normal? Maybe they send the email after the EA deadline has passed? Or after all my recommenders submit their recs?

Don’t discard RPI yet - learn more about their requirements here…

OMG!!! I clicked your link BeanTownGirl!! That is soooo perfect! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that! How you found it and how I missed it- I dunno, but its a HUGE relief and I am totally gonna apply there now! I am happy, happy, happy!

RE; CWRU:

Is there a way to check your status on line?
Can you contact an admissions person and ask?

It depends on the school. You need to run the net price calculator on each school to check need-based financial aid. Most OOS publics do not have much (or any) need-based financial aid.

Some OOS publics do have relatively low OOS list prices, like Minnesota, NCSU, Virginia Tech, Stony Brook.

Some public and private schools do offer large merit scholarships:
