Help a Junior Find a Small School

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for a fairly small school on the west coast with strong programs in english, psychology, and the arts (like dance and photography). I live in California, but I'm also looking in Nevada, Arizona, & Oregon. Other than that I don't have too many other specifics. I'm not concerned about admissions standards because I have a 4.3 GPA, although I'm not interested in an Ivy Leagues, so please don't suggest Stanford haha!

Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Stanford isn’t an Ivy, lol.

But with that GPA you should have a lot of choices. Try the Claremont Colleges Consortium…more specifically Pomona (I really want to go there.) They have a strong English program I believe. Loyola Marymount is a big larger with a strong Psycho program. But besides that you’re not going to find a lot of small schools in CA or the other states you provided.

Pomona (CA)
Claremont McKenna (CA)
Pitzer (CA)
Occidental (CA)
Whitman (WA)
Reed (OR)

Thanks for all your suggestions. I’m kind of looking for a “hidden gem” type of school. I’m fine with state schools or schools that are a little less known, and preferably not religious.
Anyone have any comments on Mills College?

Occidental has been called those exact words by many, ha.

There’s not much in Nevada besides UNR and UNLV, both of which are pretty large. However, there is a small LAC up in Tahoe called Sierra Nevada College.

[Sierra Nevada College](http://www.sierranevada.edu/home.php)

I highly recommend Whitman College

Mills is an all girls schools…-if that is your thing Scripps is a far better choice!

Any suggestions of good smaller schools in Northern California?

Like I said, the Claremont Consortium is your best bet for a small LAC-ish school in CA.

St Marys College? A gem!

Northern California… well, Mills is supposed to be good. It is a girls’ school.

University of San Francisco, perhaps? Though it is religiously affiliated.

Sonoma State University is public, medium-sized, and in Northern California. I don’t know anything about it other than that.

Evergreen?

The two that come to mind besides Claremont Colleges are Reed and Evergreen.

I do really like Sonoma State, and my family is in love with it, but I also want to have some other options.

I second whoever suggested Whitman.

My dd was looking into a small, liberal arts college on the west coast also (she’s a senior this year). The ones she ended up visiting were:

Reed
Lewis & Clark
Evergreen
University of Puget Sound
Occidental

She ended up applying to L&C, Evergreen UPS and Eckerd (in St. Petersburg, FL). She was accepted to all of them. She is going to attend Eckerd.

Is WA okay? if so, Whitworth tends to be overlooked and it matches your criteria.

Otherwise, St. Mary’s in CA is a hidden gem that you should look into.
