Well my first two semesters in freshman year of high school were pretty bad (i had a b- in biology honors for both semesters, b's in english and b+s for earth science). So I have a 3.5 unweighted GPA.. Is this particularly low or am I just overreacting? Other friends of mine say that having a 4.0 GPA is necessary for going to a good college, but idk. What were your GPA's in freshman year?

just study hard for the rest of your high school years to get a 4.0 and you’ll be fine

it kind of depends on your high school, but no matter what your freshman grades won’t have a real impact on admissions. a 3.5 can be great at a competitive high school, but at a normal one you probably want to get that up if you’re looking into applying to the most elite schools. try not to worry about it too much; you have the majority of your high school life ahead of you so try to enjoy it. work harder to get your grades up but try not to stress about it too much - as long as you try to perform to the best of your abilities you’ll end up somewhere great. :)

No offense … but your friend sounds like one of those elitist snobs who considers Ivy League/Harvard to be the only “good” schools. :)
