Help A Prospective Student Afford a U.S. Education

Let me clarify: I meant to state that working on campus (maximum of 20 hours) won’t help the OP to even make a dent in the thousands he/she will need. The student isn’t allowed to work off campus until the OPT and that will be difficult if he/she enters a field requiring US clearances. After that time, if there is no sponsor, which is happening more often than not because employers have to state that there are no US citizens available for the job.

I also meant to say that he/she is not eligible for US loans. Right now the plan is to borrow for the first year and hunt for scholarships for the following years which won’t work.

The point is, the student can’t afford the UCs, so hopefully, there were other options at other schools that have funding.

@stroem: I’m a little confused. What does the abbreviation OPT mean?

@sgopal2, OPT stands for Optional Practical Training - which is a fancy way of saying “working in your field.” So, for example, if you’re an engineering student, working in engineering for a certain period during/after your studies.

@Stroem Why do you exclude aerospace?

@mrduque, because many, if not most, aerospace jobs require a security clearance which an international student, even on OPT, will not receive.

To be honest, in my opinion, you shouldn’t really apply to these places if you can’t at least nearly afford them.
