I know this is kind of last minute but I am beginning to realize I don’t have many safeties or really any matches on my list. My stats are as follow:
32 ACT (will retake)
4.0 UW
7 APs
one extracurricular that takes up roughly 18hrs per week.
decent volunteer activities and some language related awards and NHS.
I was happy with a 32 ACT because its 75% percentile at most of the schools on my list, however I just found out I need a good chunk of merit aid (like 20k out of 60k per year) and surprise! Not many of the schools on my list offer much merit aid. Anyone have any college suggestions? I’m looking for LACs and planning to major in something business related. Preferably near the East Coast or Midwest. I would also consider a larger school with a highly respected business program(eg: IU). Would love to hear any suggestions. However I’m still hoping to go to a fairly selective school, not one like a 80%+ acceptance rate. Not that there’s anything wrong with those schools it’s just not what I’m looking for. Thanks!
You’re likely to get good merit at RPI especially if you get a higher score on the ACT. You’re a match for there. Not a LAC but small and a good biz school with tech orientation.
Also look at Grinnell and Macalester - no biz undergrad, but you could do econ there.
Villanova and Syracuse are decent options - not sure about aid though.
@insanedreamer I love Grinnell and Macalester! Heard they give a lot of financial aid (which I won’t be able to get) but not much merit aid. Might be wrong though. Will defiantly look into it.
You won’t know how much merit aid you get until you apply, so I’d say it’s worth applying to both Grinnell and Macalester (especially if your ACT score improves) and see what you get. 2 years ago my D applied to a particular college “as an extra” thinking she wouldn’t get much aid, and ended up going there tuition free
I doubt you’ll get merit at Macalester- very competitive- but the bar is lower for males, and I don’t think they have business major anyway. Look at the website. Are you applying to Indiana and Miami of Ohio?
My impression is that Grinnell can be generous with merit for the kids they really really want to bring on board, but it’s not like some other schools where it’s virtually guaranteed at certain stats (ditto Macalester). Also, I wouldn’t consider either Macalester or Grinnell a safety for anyone. Macalester could maybe be a match, but Grinnell’s admission rate is well below 30% right now. Both terrific LACs where one could lay the groundwork for most careers (I’m a fan), but I don’t get a specific business vibe from either.
@porcupine98 Yeah I am well aware that those schools are defiantly not safety. I know they don’t have specific business programs but they do have econ majors. Do you think it’s still worth applying?
@Oregon2016 That’s what I’ve heard about Macalester. Their website looks like most of its merit aid is for minorities/females. What do you mean the bar is lower for males at Macalester? Do they not get many strong male applicants or something?
We (my D and I) visited Mac and really had a nice time, but the odd thing to us was despite the higher number of females- applicants, enrolled students, and in fact visitors also touring that day- the well produced info meeting disproportionately featured males (current students and recent grads). We just got the sense that the biggest pitch was to boys.
If you can be more flexible in your geographic reach, I would suggest Trinity University in San Antonio. LAC of around 2500 students, great business school and fantastic merit that is guaranteed based on your stats. I do not agree with the University of Richmond - it might be a match for your stats, but merit is unlikely.
lots2do is correct. You should be able to keep Trinity U well under $40K with merit, and it is a terrific school. Plus, there are tons of business jobs in Texas.
In addition, you should be able to get enough Merit at Denison in Ohio, Rhodes in Memphis, Hendrix in Arkansas, Wooster in Ohio, and Dickinson in PA.
