help a SNEAKERHEAD!

Okay so I'm a rising senior. My passion in life is shoes. Yeah it probably sounds weird, but I am obsessed. I'm always looking for the next top shoe. I decided that I would really like to get into the shoe industry engineering shoes for top brands like nike, addidas, or reebok. Maybe I'll even start my own shoe company someday! Who knows?

Well my question is this: What colleges can help me reach this goal? I want to focus on engineering and design along with the business aspect of it. I don't want to go to an art or design school, because I want more options than that.

I just really want to design and sell shoes. That is my passion.

Any help/suggestions/opinions would be absolutely fantastic!

Thank you and God bless!

University of Cincinnati has a top design program and business as well. Might be a place to start looking.

Thank you! Ill definately look into it! More opinions please!!!

Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Note the Nike reference in their Wikipedia entry:

Sweet! What about top universities and their engineering programs? Does oregon have a special program?

Carnegie Mellon University has a top engineering program and design programs. It sounds like your interest in more in engineering - at CMU, a great combination would be to major in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Design.

This past year, we even had a student taught course (StuCo) called Sneakerology - which sounds like something that would have been perfect for you, lol!

But definitely check out CMU - I think it really fits your interests well.
yeah i really wanna design shoes, but I’m not big on going to an art or design school. I think I’d be better suited attending a University where I can get an engineering degree along with some business aspects. Carnegie Mellon sounds pretty cool. I’ll have to check it out. It sounds really awesome! What about engineering schools like Stanford or Northwestern? Would they put me on the right track towards this goal? What about USC? The creators of Athletic Propulsion Labs went there. Do they have a good program for that?

Shoes generally fall under “industrial design,” generally at an art/design college or other school with a great art program, including ID. I have a friend who designed and managed for a major sneaker company- art school/ID graduate.

The fellows behind Athletic Propulsion? One was an entrepreneurship major, in the business school. But, Dad was Chief Marketing Officer for Reebok, a former shoe “inventor” and previously worked for LA Gear. Etc. And, wealthy enough to underwrite the boys. That’s one heck of a leg-up. Good luck. Take a look at industrial design.

yeah their dad probably helped them out a lot! But it worked out lol! What schools would you suggest?

and by the way, thank you for that great information!

Going into any field with “backing” and a parent with deep knowledge and experience- or connections- is always different than taking an ordinary person’s route.
I’m not crazy about USNWR, but this is a start. (Yeah, CMU is there.)

Look at those to see who has the variety you need. After you get your bearings, you’ll probably be able to find and weigh other colleges with ID. Btw, I believe the AP fellows’ dad went to Ohio State. Interesting.

Very interesting! I really appreciate all your help! Do you think I should consider double majoring?

Most engineering kids talk about the time devoted to studies and projects and the challenges behind getting prerequisites covered so they can get to the upper level courses they want and need. And, scheduling challenges, in general. And, time for internships or research assistantships.

Go look at online college course catalogs; see the engineering or ID classes available. Look at the profs’ backgrounds and their interests. Then, when you’ve narrowed, come back with a new thread. You can’t do this based on our advice.
