Hi everyone,

I'm admitted to pre-econ in UCLA, and plan to major econ there.

I've read some threads and found people said that econ major wasn't very competitive and that one with econ major could graduate in only 3 years. Is that really true? I mean, I truly take my college life very seriously and consider it a great way for me to be well-prepared for my grad school (law school, possibly).

I want to major in econ there, partly because I think with tons of reading and writing and mathematical skills involved, I can get what I want from my college life. Bu after finding many people say "econ there sucks, or professors or lecturers are outside UCLA, or it's not as competitive as buzecon", I really begin to doubt the education quality of the economics department in UCLA.

Could you guys share some of your opinions about econ major there? Especially if some of you guys who are econ major there? Could you please share some of you personal experiences? Really thanks for your help in advance!! :)

I’m not a current UCLA econ major, but I’d like to say that I’m an admitted student who’s also interested in majoring in Econ. This is the second time I’ve heard that one can graduate in only 3 years as an Econ major at UCLA . . .

Personally, I don’t place a high weight on rankings, but here are some if you’re interested:

Just curious, but what specific reasons are you hearing about WHY the Econ department at UCLA may have a bad reputation?

@alwaysawriter ,

Really thanks for your advice. It really soothes my anxiety as to my concern about economics in UCLA, tosome extent.

I’m not saying that the econ department in UCLA has a bad reputation, but after reading some threads on cc about “econ thing at UCLA”, I found people here said that econ department being great in UCLA didn’t mean pro and lecturers there had high quality for teaching undergrad. Some pro are great, while some are not. That’s why the more I reach out to those info, the more I begin to doubt the education quality of econ department there.

And besides, I’e also learned that there’s nothing special required for one to major in econ. (But bizecon will require students to remain a certain kind of high gpa.) In this way, it really gives me a sense that econ is not that competitive, although it’s a popular major there.

Once again, thanks for your sources! They really help a lot! :p

why would you be concerned about graduating in three years? Wouldn’t that be a benefit for you if you pursuing law school? Also, econ might be too rigorous for at UCLA and could destroy your GPA trying to get into law school. Better to major in history or communications and yes biz econ trumps econ.

@mammajoe74,
I just think that it’s very flexible for me to major in economics because, in this way, I’ll be be able to apply for a business school or a law school or simply a grad school to gain master degree in economics. I cannot be sure. That’s a part of reason for me to choose it.

You don’t need an econ major to apply for business school.
