Help! accepted, but need to give decision to attend before other decisions come in

Thankfully, I'll hear from Northwestern soon. I'm tempted to call Cornell, but I don't think I will.

My earliest enrollment deadline is supposed to be Dec. 3rd, but I think the school will grant me an extension given that I haven't even received my financial aid info yet.

It depends on the college, Sanjen. There are colleges that take very few transfers and do so only as they know their attrition, and where it occurs. An oversubscribed major will not accept more students at times. For transfers, the reason for transferring, the grades from the other college, and how the new college can be an improvement (specifics) for the student are important. That often involves some commitment to a field, so a transfer student is expected to be further along in knowing what he wants to do. THe most successful transfers often want to move to a college that has more to offer in a field than the current school, now that the student has an area of interest.

I think you should at least ask for the extension, and make sure you get them to agree in writing, say an e-mail, so that you don't get someone to agree who disappears or says you misunderstood.

I called Northwestern to try to find out my decision early, and I actually got to speak to the transfer admissions head. I told her my name and about Rice and WashU's enrollment deposit deadlines (Dec. 3rd and 4th), but she said "I can't tell you your decision now...it's a bit complicated, but you should hear back on Monday. If you don't, please call me that afternoon." What do you guys make of this message?

Btw, are enrollment deadlines postmark deadlines? If not, I have a dilemma since Dec. 3rd and 4th are this coming Monday and Tuesday! Should I start panicking?

Two things sanjen:
Check the info you got from your accepted schools, it should say whether the deposit need to be RECEIVED or POSTMARKED by the due date.
Second, if it is to be received by the date, is there a mechanism to make the deposit online?
Best of luck.

They don't specify. That's why I asked :). Anyway, the office was closed when I got out of class. Rice has an online system, but they have several paper documents I need to turn in as well.
