HELP, Algebra 1 or Geometry

I don’t see why Asians are the stereotypical “good at math” kids. Per-capita, it seems like Jews are better than Asians. At least in this area, which I’ll admit might be a factor of affluent Jews and Asians of all social status. Still, I think the good at math stereotype is also aimed at wealthy Asians so…

I’m jewish and I suck at math. At first I thought that was racist because we’re the money hording type, but then I realized, ok sure. <_<

To be honest, I sucked at Algebra I then when I got to Geometry I was good at it because Geometry uses very simple algebra.

I’m Jewish, I’m good at math.
But I digress.

Take Alg I again. You really need to have a firm grasp of the basics before you can move on, and a D doesn’t show a firm grasp of the basics.

I agree with the above poster. Algebra 1 and Geometry are very easy foundation classes, but without them, higher math is like trying to decipher Sanskrit. If you don’t have a firm grasp and understanding of the basic concepts that are learned within Algebra 1 and even Geometry, it is virtually impossible to succeed in higher math.

Don’t let her advance until she is comfortable and successful with Algebra 1. Find a better tutor, because if the teacher can’t even get your daughter to do well in her own class, then she isn’t a good tutor and probably is a bad teacher as well.

I would recommend finding some sort of Summer class that teaches Algebra, but that’s more of a crash-course. Your daughter sounds like she needs a more in-depth year-long course. She’s only in eighth grade, so she isn’t behind. Re-take it next year.

I’ll also vote for retaking alg I in 9th grade…she’ll hit pre-calc by senior year and, if she wants, could possibly take AP Stats depending on your school…unless you/her have your hearts set on a tippy-top school, she’ll be fine…

I’m a little surprised that your daughter’s teacher didn’t suggest that she drop down to regular alg I early on…wonder if that would have resulted in a different outcome…

Or are you in a district where alg I in 8th grade is only at the honors level?

you also mention that she is not succeeding “this semester”? what was her grade last semester?
