Help an anthropology major pick LACs?

Hi, I am a junior and have a list of schools that I am looking at for a cultural anthropology degree. I am also looking to go to grad school and hopefully get my PhD.

From pretty good public school in CT.

Stats:
UW GPA: 3.6ish. (I had a terrible freshman year)
W GPA: 4.2 (my GPA will raise after this year)
SAT: Aiming for a 2000.
Rank: Don't really know.. top 20%?
APs: Can't start taking APs until Junior year. I am currently taking AP Lang and APUSH.
Senior year schedule: AP Pysch, AP Government, AP Econ, AP Stats, AP Lit, AP environmental, Honors world literature, honors oceanography, and honors theoretical humanities.
ECS: I have an internship at a museum where I curate exhibits, photograph their archaeological pieces for their website, photograph their gift shop and exhibits, complete research, along with a lot of other random things. I am going to be able to get a fantastic rec from my boss.
I have also gone on 4 archaeological digs in my state where I worked with multiple PhDs. I also had another internship in a city half way across the country from me at a museum that I hope to work at one day. I worked there with collections management.
Additionally, I tutor advanced writers at the local elementary school.
Clubs: Global Voice (10,11,12)
Peer Leadership (9,10)
Event coordinator for a freshman-immersion program (11,12)

I also really love landscape photography and plan on entering professional shows this year. I plan on sending a supplement for it. I also have a personal website for my photography and museum work. (I can PM you the link if you want to see it).

Here is my list:
Bowdoin (top choice, probably EDI)
Colgate (second choice)
Colby (tied for second choice)
Bates
Skidmore
Gettsyburg
Dickinson
Lafayette
Lycoming
U of Mary Washington

What other schools could I look at that would be good for me? (I know my list is top-heavy). I really want to stay in the northeast, no more south than Virgina.

Thanks!

…bump!

Are finances important to you? If you are going to have to take out loans to go to an LAC, I would suggest putting some financial safeties on the list. Anthro majors don’t make a lot of money typically, and grad schools will need to be paid for.

What would you suggest as a financial safety? My state flagship is UCONN and I have no interest in attending it because it is so large.

Finance isn’t really a huge deal for me.

You sound a lot like me…I’m also a photographer interested in anthropology applying to Bowdoin, Colby, Bates, and Skidmore (although I’m applying to the Maine schools because I like their environmental science programs, which is also what I want to major in). I’d be interested in seeing your website, can you PM it to me?

University of Michigan and University of Chicago both have really great anthropology programs, if you want to look into those two.

@Taft10: Wow, that’s crazy. I will PM my site to you. I was thinking about U Chicago, but I don’t think I really have the slightest chance there.

Any other ideas?

Beloit always seems to be mentioned for anthropology. There are tons of threads on the college search forum for anthropology. You might want to add in a few bigger places with bigger programs just for comparison if you are deciding in April. Check if you can do ED I at Bowdoin as well as early action at Michigan.

Don’t know about the anthropology programs, but some other great LACS you can check out are Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams, Bucknell, and Middlebury, just off the top of my head.

Okay great thanks guys! I’m fairly apprehensive when looking at Michigan because it is so far away from home, but thanks for all the suggestions

I have very comparable scores and experience to you and I will be applying early decision to University of Richmond (for international studies and cultural anthropology). I know you said it may be too far away, but its a nice school and its anthropological programs are respected and moving up. I looked at a lot of the schools you are thinking of btw. A lot are very rural campuses which do not offer a lot of opportunity outside of the campus, but thats just my opinion.

Hatshepsut -I have been to her temple at Deir el Bahari- amazing. It is clear that you have strong financial resources so you may want to consider UCLA or Berkeley- they are letting gobs of out of staters in who can pay $45,000/year and out-of-staters don’t need the scores that in-state kids need, just the money ! Both UCLA and Berkeley have strong Middle Eastern Studies programs. I studied Arabic at UCLA, and it was a great class.

I have no idea of the pay for PhDs in Anthropology (other than to suspect that with the PhD glut its hard to find a job) but at many of the higher-ranked programs PhD students get support thru a combination of grants, teaching and research assistantships, etc. For example go to [Anthropology Rankings — PhDs.org Graduate School Guide](http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/anthropology) and look at the info under the “support” tab for some of the schools. Spend some time looking at the sites of some of these programs

Thanks for all of the suggestions and information! I will look into the U of Richmond! The UCs are way too far away from me, unfortantly.

Whoops, I spelled “unfortunately” wrong and I can’t edit it for some reason!
